JP, could you bring my golden chain and leave it at Steve's? TR much closer to me than CU.

DD, I'm sure the valves are set at the engine plant in a cold engine, setting compensated for warmup. Any valve setting I've ever seen was for cold, which makes more sense to me; warm is variable, cold is repeatable. Plus which would you rather work on, cold or hot?

One last thought before you tear into your engine . . .

When I was driving the Piggie at about 5000 feet, it had a strong gasoline smell, making me glad I hadn't lit up my cigar. This was in addition to the exhaust fumes. So, could your tapping be from a bad mix of air/gas (have you checked your air filter?)

Final thought on warm vs. cold . . . it's all good!:)

The Piggie has always had a slight exhaust smell (desmogged 2f could be a culprit) but I've never smelled gas before. I thought it had gotten slightly worse lately. Haven't checked the air filter in a few months... I've also never had the Piggie that high before. I thought as you get above about 5,000 ft these 2fs start to run rich due to the thinner air....is that right? I didn't smell any gas back at lower altitude.

also there is there no need to pick up that special tool unless you specifically want it nifty as it is it is not neccessary; I have done this 5-6 times with just a flat head and my ratcheting box wrench no problem.......

Thanks Marshall. I"ll be working from about 8 am on. JP is showing up around 10 am. Compression test? - this is starting to not sound good :mad:. On the other hand the engine still seems to have good power. The top end was rebuilt about 22k ago by a dealership. I couldn't keep up with my 55 (David Davis piloting) in David's 62 without the auto dropping into a lower gear - one reason I dropped off the back.

Checked again last night - oil was almost full (added just a bit), coolant was full (engine never ran hot per gauge). I'm picking up a new air filter...

marshall just wants to try out his new compression tool............ no need to be concerned; I don't see how a knocking could be related to poor compression. Plus if you have good power and aren't using burning alot of oil your compression should be fine............ guess we'll find out :grinpimp:
 
Been doing a little research and thinking (I know that is dangerous) but it looks like I'm running a little rich too...might be time for some carb adjustment???

Picking up new plugs, fuel filter and air filter....figure it can't hurt.

Have you thought about using the Club Engine Analyzer?

And I don't mean strapping JP underneath and doing 60 on I-85. That thing has all sorts of diagnostics, and its free!

No doubt, the Piggie has power! :pig: Adjusting valves never hurt, and if its just a carb adjustment, hurrah!

I didn't think the club engine analyzer was up and running yet...

That and the thought of JP adjusting my valves with his toes makes me chuckle... :grinpimp:
