So i have an oil leak that i am wanting to tackle in a couple of months. From what i can tell it is not coming from valve cover. Is this a classical head gasket leak? If so pending on $$$ i would like go ahead and have rebuild on top end. I get smoke at startup but not sure if it is always there. It is not a very heavy smoke unless i am revving the engine.:meh:

if your carb is flooding out your going to get smoke. A rich running engine will both smoke black as well as burn oil. Cyl washing is bad over time.

the oil leak...if your talking about leaking at the back of the engine is the classic leak. It's either the rear main seal OR freeze plug.

Engines as old as ours will smoke a little bit of white at first start up...most high mileage/old engines will. This is common so long as it's not thick and it goes away immediately.

Don't expect 20 year old valve seals to work they way they did when new especially if the engine has sat or cheap oil has been used over the years.

If you have head gasket issues you will usually find water in oil or oil in water as well as thin white smoke or thick blue smoke constantly coming out of the tail pipe along with really terrible engine performance.

you posted that pic as i was typing lol...i dont' know where that oil is coming from.

Take some de greaser and wash the engine clean.

Once dry take some spray anti-persprant deoderant and spray that entire side of the block. Start the enigne.

With the thick white powder all of the engine you will see exactly where that oil is coming from. You just have to be patient and watch it til the white turns black

rear main seal was replaced in 2001 i think. Doesnt mean it is right though

Could that be the oil galley leaking? If so, better get that tapped and plugged before it blows out completely. Then you will be left with a mess and a dry engine in no time flat.

oil looks ok on dipstick. Water in radiator looks crappy though. Needs to be flushed i am sure. I figured i would get a cheap long handled brush from dollar store and scrub down what i can and watch it.

That is a pretty easy fix isn't it. Pull old plug, tap hole, insert new plug?? And i guess replace hg since it is under it.

No need to remove the head, just one head bolt to catch the crap before it falls into your oil pump system.

Follow the links above if you think this is where it is weeping. And don't wait 2 months or else you might be on here looking for a new engine.:)

Best way to tell, degrease everything and keep checking it until you verify the start of the trail.

Will be fixed in next couple of weeks. Not daily driver so it can sit.

Anyone who has done this wanna help a newb out??

What size tap do i need? Figured that is the most expensive tool needed. Might can reant at auto parts store or something

got it

Yess!! just found a gift card to lowes for $40 clams. Feels like christmas. That will cover die set and probably drill bit.

looks to be a very easy repair so long as you do it in the vehicle. Just got to make sure none of the shavings get down into the engine. Plan on shooting it real good with cleaner then chaning/flushing out your oil immediately.

Post up the exact tap size you need i might have one that you can use. I have both metric and standards here at the shop, that should save you a little cash.

Drive it, seize it and contact Anesti to have him help you source a 12H-T drop that in, and accelerate up the mountain on HWY 25 in 5th gear... Nothing says "I need a new motor" like one that is blown, just ask nascar drivers... Kidding, unless you really want a diesel and the 20 or so MPG that it offers...
