I got a used Toyota Service Manual and it has both HD and LD sections. I am used to working on Fords and GMs that both have a section on decoding the VIN and chassis tags in the front of the manual but the Toyota version does not.

So my 95 (at least on the US title) LJ70 has coil springs. So does that instantly make it a LD? or are there HD versions of coil spring LJ70?

The chassis tag is LJ70LV-MEXM if that helps and the code underneath it is 202 FX11 G145, R151 F

So is there a good reference out there to decode the codes?

I ”believe“ some of the codes you mentioned are as follows:
LJ = L Block
70 = Cab/Chassis Type/WheelBase = 2 Door in your case
LV = Left Hand Drive Vehicle???
MEXM = Euro Market???
202 FX11 G145 = not sure
R151F = Transmission Type

Good question, though.

202 and FX11 refer to paint/trim and manufacturing plant IIRC. G145 is the differential code, referring to an 8.0”, 4 pinion limited slip diff with a 4.88:1 ratio.

L= L Series Engines
J= Land Cruiser
7= 70 series
0= Short Wheel Base
L= Left hand Drive
V= Van, hardtop, FRP Top

M= 5 speed manual floor shift
E= VX grade type
X= Turbo
W= Europe market specifications

202= Black
FX11= Interior color code

G= 8.0" Differential
14= 4.88 gear ratio
5=4 pinion with limited slip differential in the rear

R151F= 5 speed manual transmission, 4WD.

LJ70 is a light/medium duty specification Land Cruiser.

Not trying to hi-jack, but on a similar note on the Light Duty 70 series bolted to R151F Transmissions,
Can anyone confirm if the Transfer Case Code/Type is the Gear Driven, RF1A?

And if so, is it identical as what bolted up to a Tacoma / 4Runner MTs on similar years of production?
Any differences in parts, if doing a rebuilt? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

I'm almost certain all the T-cases in the light duty 70 series are proper landcruiser split cases. Remember that our rear axles have the diff offset to one side. That would never work with the Tacoma/4Runner/Hilux t-cases, because they are setup for a centered rear diff.

So rebuild of the light duty 70 t-case should be very similar to same year heavy duty 70 t-cases. Only difference might be input shafts from the different transmissions. You could check EPC diagrams to know for sure.

Sorry I didnt reply earlier, thanks for the breakdown. The limited slip rear is a nice surprise

Every LD, has front and rear coil suspension
and the front diff are 8" high pinion like a FJ80, FZJ80....
the rear axle has a very common 8" diff carrier idem like a old mini truck or tacoma / 4runner 8"

the 70 series LD are very comfortable for DD.
