My car insurance is Allstate.

I've asked my agent several times to add my new (to me) JDM Import Hilux to my coverage policy that I have on three other vehicles (including one US config Toyota PU).

I get the feeling she is stalling.

I have a temp registration for the Hilux (out of state title transfer), but she said she may be having issues with the non-standard VIN.

I am tired of being ignored and I am wanting to get insurance so I can drive the PU on public roads.

I have read that others had issues sometimes because of the VIN isn't a VIN, but they got it resolved.

Any feedback on insurers that know how to deal with this issues?

Tell the agent you need an answer so you can determine if you will need to move ALL of your policies to a different carrier.

Travelers did it for me at an agreed upon value of $25k, using Goosehead Insurance Agency

Geico added my hdj, them canceled, then I talked to them and they added it back then cacnelled again..

Bottom line is they have to manually enter the Vin, like override the required digits.

My 40 has a short VIN; both State Farm and now USAA have insured it without problem or any question at all.

I recently bought a 1999 Hilux surf in great condition and did not have any issue adding it to my NC Farm Bureau auto policy. Because it was more that X years old they had me submit pictures of all four sides, but that was it. I also had a quote from a traditional insurance agency and they didn’t have an issue outside of requesting photos

I’m in need to help insuring a 1992 rhd Land Cruiser. My insurance company Safeco doesn’t want to insure it because it doesn’t have a full 17 digit vin. I live in Washington state and looking for an independent insurance agency that could insure my vehicle. Thanks.

The thing that gets me is that there are probably a lot of vehicles out that that don't have a 17 char VIN; per Wikipedia:

By 1966, GM had settled on a 13-digit VIN, and standardized its VIN format across its divisions in 1972.

In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format.

And I find it confusing that some insurance companies can't work around this issue when there obviously must be cars they insure that have VINs that are not 17 chars long.
