Has anyone used the RetroSound S-62 6-1/2" 2-way speakers in their front doors?

RetroSound S-62

Crutchfield says these should fit without an issue for the LX450. Has anyone used this speaker setup before?

installed polk audio db652s in all four doors and they sound AMAZING! I would do those again in a heartbeat...in fact, i put the 5.25 variant in my heep.

Did you have to use any adapters for the front or the back?

i also went polk all the way around with the 6.5 round, no adapters needed but you will need to cut up the rear doors to make the speaker hole bigger so they fit

I did the same with cheap Pioneer speakers. Pretty easy install, HUGE gains in sound even with inexpensive parts.

definitely worth the upgrade to go to 6.5 and it gives you better selection.

also as a side note there are also speakers inthe dash and in the headliner in the back, the fronts are in series with the front doors and the ones in the headliner are in series with the rear doors. i did 3.5 round in the dahs and had to make mounting tabs for them and in the rear did 1 in tweeters that i had to make a mounting plate for. took a little more time but worth it to have all 8 speakers working

I'm interested in the retrosound, or other speakers that do not require cutting the door, or using anything other than the factory grill. I replaced the head unit years ago when the OEM radio died. There was an improvement in sound, but only slightly, and it's complete garbage now. Time to do a search.

i used the cheap pioneers. They sound good but drown under any small amount of bass. I put tweeters in the dash and had to build some brackets for them. I purchased a 10inch subwoofer and installed it in the cargo area. it was a rockfard fosgate came with box and an internal amp for like $150. It was easy to install and has a quick single one plug connection so i can take it out quickly when i need to carry a ton of stuff. Turning the bass down at the doors and running the subwoofer sounds amazing it also has a dial that i installed under the dash so i can quickly adjust the bass. To be honest the box is pretty stout and durable. I've carried all kinds of junk on top of it.

i used the plastic spacer on the rear speakers. I cut off the ears so it was less noticeable.

Why are you opposed to anything other than the factory grill? it is so limiting for speaker choices and not permanent. If you don't like black speaker grilles, then paint them. You've already changed up the factory radio...

if you not into possibly cutting the doors and only using factory grills thn it sounds like your not going to hve a lot of options to select from or just not do it at all. cutting the doors is not hard and using the grills that come with the speakers will give you the best fit and finish when your done

The OEM speakers were blown when I picked up my LX450. I went with Polk DB651 in all 4 doors. Took a bit of trimming with a Dremel for the rear doors and I used adhesive backed foam strips to seal things together. Result was a clean look and a very decent sound when combined with a fairly inexpensive single DIN Pioneer head unit.

reviving this to see if anyone's tried the RetroSound S-62 speakers recommended by Crutchfield yet. Not an audiophile, just want some sound coming out of the front door speakers where there is none now. Still have the original head unit.

I have the same question about RetroSound S-62. I appreciate all the comments and feedbacks about using other brands/models and the merits of keeping or tossing the OEM grill. But the question I have is if anybody has used the RetroSound speakers and how the installation went?

Retrosound S-62. You do have to cut the rear door a bit and you do have to drill mounting holes. Also, you can not reuse the factory covers.

This sounds (forgive the pun) like too much trouble. Anybody done a simple 4”(?) install lately ? I’ve pulled up several threads from the archive, but the threads are all old & the speaker models are no longer available.

I just a few months ago installed a RetroSound speaker in my LX450 because the passenger OEM speaker was shot - no cutting required, you can retain the factory speaker grills - follow Crutchfield's instructions EXACTLY, or you will damage the door interior trim (the black 'garnish', specifically)

speaker works fine, cost was totally acceptable, and Crutchfield instructions were key to success

incidentally, Crutchfield specifies the same RetroSound speakers for a Miata, so I had already installed them a few years ago in my little  car when those speakers crumbled :D

That sounds way easier! Did you use the S-42?

I used, in independent wrenching sessions on different vehicles, the Crutchfield-recommended replacement for the Miata front speakers, and for the LX450 front speakers, respectively

as far as I understand it, we are talking 6.5" speakers here, not 4" or somesuch like you posted

Got it! Misunderstood the assignment and was going with rear door reference. Agree, 6.5 inch do fit in the front doors without cutting or drilling. I did change the speaker covers from OEM to Retro-Sound covers though.
