Has anyone else had this issue? When shifting into reverse, it pretty much jerks the whole Cruiser. Doesn't matter if its up to operating temp or not, though it is *slightly* worse when the engine is still cold. It shifts into drive and all the other gears perfect, its only into reverse that this happens. What can be done to fix this, or is this somehow normal? Thanks!

does it happen if you floor the accelerator pedal or just ALL the time. like if you`re in your driveway and casually put into reverse

What model and year is the vehicle? Can you describe the issue a bit more; is it more of a screech or a repeated slipping/jerking?? Or it is just one bang or clunk when it goes into reverse?

There is a known problem with the A343F transmisssions up through early 1997 but it seems to not get worse over time. Here's a link to a previous discussion with more links in the thread:

A343F transmission chatter shifting out of reverse

Sounds normal, try pushing brake harder when shifting into R. Also you can greese your slipyokes ( :censor: ) and drive flanges which may or may not help.

Also check your U-joints for slop when greasing them, but do not overgrease the slip yolks, stop pumping the instant you see movement, if not before. How many miles on your 94?

I think you have the same problem as me. Auto VX 1993 and it has a pause before jumping into reverse which shakes the car a bit
I have greased the yokes but still does it

Do your dash shift lights work? If they don't the computer doesn't know what gear the transmission is in so things don't work like they should. Even if they do work you may still check the gear selector indicator jammie <--technical term. on the side of transmission.

I have actually since sold the land cruiser, but it's interesting you say that because the lights didn't work!

yeah, the issue is that the wiring connector from the trans at the firewall below the PHH and above the starer was corroded. Mine did the same thing when I bought it. fixed the wiring, dash lights worked and it shifts nice. Interesting that the auto-trans still works just fine for the most part with no connection to the computer that controls it (go team toyota). more info here,

if anyone cares
Thanks

So yours only did this with the reverse gear ? If so im assuming the corrosion slowed the signal moving between the computer and the transmission?

Mine was rough shifting into reverse because the engine idle speed wasn't dropping when you started to shift. It drove on the highway but not great, the shift point were definitely not where they needed to be. When I pulled apart the wiring there was no connection between the trans computer and the shift position sensor (located on the side of the trans). If you study the electrical section in the FSM you will notice that if the shift lights on the dash aren't working, then the trans computer doesn't have a connection to the gear position sensor either, because its using the same wiring. Clear as mud? Cliff notes: fix dash lights, trans will shift better.

That's interesting. I'll have to check my dash lights though im not sure I have them.
Did you have to have the car up on a hoist or take anything out to access the side of the trans? If I can do it in my driveway piece of cake then i'll give it a shot

no lift needed. Did mine in my garage, some parts are painful but not bad. The wiring connectors you need to get are below your break booster down by your stater. There is a connection in the harness there that gets corroded. you will need to pull the driver front tire. and probably the trans dip stick to get at it. There are some wire ties on top of the trans that are a pain to get broken loose but its doable. my writeup starts at about post 7 in my build
Let me know if you need more info, good luck

I'm going to tackle mine this weekend, when you remove the dipstick tube, does fluid come out? Do I need to drain the tranny first?

I was messing with mine a couple weeks ago and I couldn't get the plug apart, the detent tab was already broken off by someone else meddling, I wonder If I should just cut the whole plug off.

Yes that's a good photo of the connector, that aea of the car is a pain to access so yes will need to pull off the tire to get good access to it
