Has anybody actually hand crank started an F engine? Just curious since the F has a hand crank provision but is a biatch to turn over and would probably kill whoever was cranking it if it did start even though it's supposed to disengage. Maybe I'm just a wimp but it didn't work when I tried it. :princess:

I know a guy who's handcranked cruisers all over the middle east. He's not big, but is probably bigger than most of the locals. I've never asked him what the start procedure was though. Maybe I better?

Indeed I have. Many times. Why, just this last Pigrun I demonstrated a successful two-handed-crank Pigstarting of Elvin's noble beast, to the delight and astonishment of the assembled Horde. It may have been captured on video as well...

Just remember, the key has to be on

And backfire equals broken arm. Better be in tune.

WOW! can I get a copy of that video?!?
please! please! please!

seriously, I'd love to show it to my friends who are amazed at the handcrankability, and don't believe it.

Where do you get the hand cranks? Does anybody sell or manufacture them?

Not hard to make. Made them for old Lincoln welders before.

I tired starting mine a few years ago with the crank handle.... man is was a biatch!.. I never got it running even after warming it up... I only use that handle for adjusting my valves. Also on the front of the crank pulley where the handle plugs into it is twist notched so if the vehicle does kick back it wont break your arm.. it will disengage the handle.

I knew I was missing something :grinpimp:

I don't have the toyota crank. I've been using a handle from a crappy car jack, it works ok to turn the engine over for valve adjusting, but might be sketchy if the beast actually started.

new from the dealer, about $20

I'm pretty sure the notch kicks the handle out when the moter starts. If the motor kicks backwards, the cranker takes the brunt.

depending on the year, you can get most of the tools still. the bag.............nope :(

Cool... new from the dealer..... hey... what about the complete tool kit for the FJ55? Can we still get those as well?

Looking at Landpimp's pics, the crappy car jack handle I have been using as a crank is the original handle, so I don't have any excuses why I can't hand start my cruiser exept that I am a weenie.

So I will continue to try hand cranking until I lose an appendage or the old beast starts, and the day it does work I shall propose it to be Land Cruiser Hand Crank Day and there will be a worldwide synchronised crank start at some predetermined time with much beer drinking to follow and probably before too....or I could just turn the key like everyone else.

anyone who has owned an english (early) vehicle knows the formula to crank start ,1. warm engine up (drive to pub) 2 boast about how you dont neecd a battery to crank over your car 3. pull out crank insert into proper hole(ouch) turn on key 4. crank as hard as you can 1 rev should do 5.dont wait for block to cool down otherwise your screwed!!!

Bummer.... The othe night I happened to be reading a japanese FJ55 page. They had the bag with all the tools as well as those under the rear seat.

btw... when I tried to crank start my other 55... I bent that handle like it was a stick of butter... soft metal... thats when I stopped trying and just use them for valve adjustments now.

I can crank start my 40 with treeroots crank, i'm not a big guy 155lb but it just takes one powerful 2/3 rev of the crank
