Looks like the next test is on Monday, December 8th. I think I am going to get prepped for this one and head to Cloudcroft for the test.

If anyone else is around and wants to car pool, let me know. I'll be taking my fast car, not my slow truck.

EDIT: Do they give out more than one exam? Say I wanted to do both the Technician and General exams in the same day...do they allow that?

EDIT2: This is totally geeky stuff. It's like doing research for an MA project or something....real cool.

Yes, you can take the tests for multiple licenses on the same day. I believe it is the same testing fee too.

A trip to Cloudcroft is a nice drive (at least part of the way) but you should be able to find a test here in town just about every weekend. Send Daryl Clutter an e-mail or give him a call. You can probably Google to get his contact information. There are tests that are not publicized but anyone would be welcome. Local clubs and stuff like that.

Too late....I'm taking a personal day and enjoying a ride to see a part of the state that I have yet to see....

And find a good burger along the way!

Thanks for the local tip though Mike.

For a good burger you should try the Owl Bar and Cafe in San Antonio - Oppenheimer and friends stayed there...

The Springs in Socorro has good food and a micro brewery with great root beer and specialty beers. They also have a Starbucks in there.

Clutter told Evan and I that each test has its own fees.

The Springs has great food, and even better beer. The calzones are HUGE!!

I think W5YI has a different policy than ARRL. The test in Cloudcroft is ARRL. When I took mine in October it was ARRL and there were several folks that not only retested for the same $14, but also took upgrade tests at the same time.

There were people taking multiple exams at our testing site, but Darryl made it clear that re-tries for the same Technician exam (after failing once) would cost an additional $14, and that there was an additional fee for each higher level exam taken as well.

I'm game (and can bring the faux-lux if the weather isn't looking so hot). I have a trip that ends on the 7th, so I should be back easily on the 7th. If not, certainly on the morning of the 8th.

I guess I'd better get to taking some practice tests or something.

Nice Dan!

Sounds like a plan...

Jon suggested the ARRL Technician Q&A book, and also the ARRL Technician "textbook." I had every intention of reading the textbook, but ran out of time. But the Q&A book was great. It has some explanation of basics, but it covers all of the questions and answers. It does a good job of explaining why the correct answers are correct. It's a good resource and I would recommend it. I'm considering going for the General exam at some point, and I would get both of the same books for that level.

Any chance I could borrow said Q&A book? I'm out on a trip from the 4th-7th, so it'd be nice to have some reading material. I don't see any bookstores with it in stock in town, and I'm thinking overnight shipping (so it would be here before I leave on wednesday) would be an arm and a leg....

Dan

Dan.

Evan still has my books. Might be easier if you get them from Evan directly.

And a PM sent back to Dan.

Jon - I'll keep you posted as to the whereabouts of your books, but I should be able to pass them on to Dan today or tomorrow. Thanks again for letting me borrow them!

Just to keep their whereabouts clear...

I've got both of your books Jon.

Muchas gracias to both of you.

Dan

Good luck to both you and Onur on the exam. And save your Cloudcroft partying for after you pass the test!

And in case anybody wants to go the extra step I have the same two books for the General Class too. But like Evan, I didn't get into the textbook as much as I would have liked and mostly studied the Q&A with online test support.
