Hey man, don't rush it now. Best to sit down with a beer, when you have it all bolted down and think of all the little things, Like oil and filters. Good Luck with it.

shoot, I'm savin my beer money for an oil filter! got the flywheel and clutch done. water pump, fan, and stat housing done. it's like 100 degrees out there right now. time to take a nap and think about some big lights. up next is the PCV inlet, dizzy stab, exhaust down pipe install, fuel lines, heater hoses and starter motor. then it is reset valve lash to Delta specs, double check the head bolt torque cover valves add belts and air cleaner. then I can re-route the vacuum lines and think about the gearboxen. Might wait on those for the help I was going to wait for to drop the motor in. I've already got my break in oil and additive. off to napa then back at it

took your advise Ron, had a beer and figured out how to flush the cooler....bolted the cooler upside down-caddywhopmus using one of the banjo bolts in the return port of the cooler and into the supply side of the mount. poured in 5 quarts and primed the pump till oil squirted out the open end of the cooler right over the front diff and into the drip pan:bounce: swapped in some new orings and washers and bolted the thing in its new home. took the valve cover off and started resetting valve lash- I mean set valve lash, cause it must not have been done previously:mad:. bolted on the valve cover and remembered that I wanted to watch the oil at the top first:mad::mad: re removed the valve cover and primed primed primed till the battery ran dead....still no top end oil, and yes I'm at TDC:mad:WTF. I'm gunna be pissed if he got the head gasket on bass ackwards. I'm so close to firing this thing off, and still so far away:mad: where's the whiskey?

can't believe I missed it.... the idiot tab of the head gasket is in front:bang:. I'm gunna hafto have a talk. gunna yank the head tomorrow and stick it back on over a stone brand gasket I had it the trunk:mad: I think some of the assembly time should come back my way now. Guess I'll have to see what he did to the insides:mad:

Oh no, that totally sucks! Sounds like maybe you need a new motor builder. That's messed up. :(

I'm sure(hoping) he does good machine work, think this must have been his first 2F. I need another block bored/honed and hung, so I hope these things are just learning curve stuff, I'll try to educate him here, and next time, I'll do the assembly post crank/rods/pistons/cam bearings myself. at this point, I just need to get running again, so I'll do what I need to do the do it right. I ALMOST skipped the top end oiling verification... at least it's just the rockers and head bolts that have to come out to do the swap

yanked head, took pics; it was upside down, and the oil hole was blocked...put trail spare el-cheapo Stone gasket on:meh: gunna hafta do for now. torqued to spec re readjusted valves. monkeyed around with the dizzy for a while. I think it's lined up...got the starter mounted, hoses plumbed, and lost half my weight in water and salt. next is the alt, and belts, and the use the starter to finish setting the dizzy and prime the top end. then it'll be back on the exhaust and PCV inlet, install rad and fill the water jacket. not going to have it driving tonite, but I ought to be able to run it in and make sure the rings seal...

Good Job, Man. You work well, under the gun. I used to work through the night, getting my 40 ready for the Holiday weekends, years ago. Now I talk a good game. :)

Eat alot of Campbell's chicken noodle soup, it's high in salt.

Stay safe and Good Luck!

Ron you walk the walk; you can talk all you want.;) uff, it's so hot out there. I'm on 15 out and 25 in right now, but it's almost there. Thanks for the pep talk! it does help:cheers:

 it's 107* with 15%:crybaby:

welp, got the dizzy jammed up good in the oil pump hole, the cam spins all the way back, but there's no dizzy rotation or oil pressure:crybaby: seems the dizzy shaft is bound in the oil pump hole and the cam gear must have sheered the pin on the dizzy shaft. the pan is off, and I am not certain how I will go about removing these 2 pieces of s*** from the block without completely destroying the rotating assembly...thinkin about pulling the pump assy off the stand and driving the dizzy out from the bottom. it was all I could do last night to not take a road flare to the gas tank. even thought about offing the lot to anyone who would take it all before the end of the week. I am now resolved to getting it done. and I will NEVER let anyone touch a motor of mine again without some serious cruiser credentials. now to track down that spare dizzy I loaned out...

got the dizzy out. had to drop the pick up off the oil pump and drive the dizzy out from the bottom. cam gear is fine- heck it was mated perfectly to the dizzy gear and had been set at the correct tooth, but the sheer pin is, well, sheered. dizzy is junk now anyway. the oil pump hole was too tight to allow the dizzy to seat into the cam gear and oil pump and still turn in the bore. I thought the problem was going to be mine due to the fact that I removed the oil pump mounting block from the block months ago when I disassembled it and that it didn't get lined up correctly before the pan went on, but that was not the issue. it is clearly a binding issue with the pump housing. this will be brought into the machinist this week along with the pics of the head gasket issue. I ought to have some credit afforded me for the failure to assemble the motor with due diligence. he can take up the oil pump issue with his supplier. Gunna get my spare dizzy back tomorrow and use the factory oil pump housing that has 200k+ miles on it and I'm certain is still just fine for use. I may be starting a rebuild disaster thread in the 40s section when it all gets worked out. I have learned alot- and I thought I was already in the know:rolleyes: found several issues I could not find reference to in any of the archived threads here. if only I had a boring machine and a head bench- I went into the wrong industry:rolleyes:

machinist said sorry and he'll own it. he honed the oil pump housing to accept the dizzy, and said he'd rather I use the fixed new one- implying that he also owns the condition of the motor he assembled as well, so I'll run it:meh: or I'll run the old one:confused:. anyway, he's going to get me some new gaskets, and I got my spare dizzy back, so it looks like I ought to get off of here and go start putting s*** back together

I compromised. Had to cut the end off of the 55 cable and used u-clamp splice for now. I had one tiller splice which I used to take up the slack on the passenger side fzj80 brake cable(due to shortened housing)I will get 2 or 3 more tillers to replace the u clamps with.....

How has your cable held up? Just picked up a '81 40 rear axle for my pig for the drum mounted ebrake, trying to figure out what do do about a cable;) Did you just use the standard 3/16" tiller clamps?

Thanks!
Tucker

Wow! Sorry to hear about your troubles...

Tucker, Chris (Shark Bait) in Rising Sun had a very nice Pig that he ran (I think dual) toy boxes in. He had a write up in the Trials about his Pig and he found a custom maker of cables for the parking brake.

yep 3/16 tillers... they've kept fine( I used 3 in a row for now, so they can't really back off...) I am currently using the 80 series ebrake cable complete with floor mounted pull handle/bucket. It is the same type as the 60 series, fairly sure it is the same as the late 40 with wheel mounted ebrake. the 40 series or 60 series cables should work with very little slack to take up.....I'd recommend using the 60 series cable as it should be long enough to reach where you mount the handle- it will not reach the dash mounted pull:frown: and it seems the mid 80s 4runners and trucks use a similar brake cable altho it is longer(long enough to reach dash mount I think..._) and they also utilize a t handle type of pull altho it is already set up for a cable complete with pulley wheel for a cable guide. you might look into something like that unless you're ok w/ cutting the floor and sticking the floor mount pull handle in between the bench seats. when the motor project finishes up, I will be installing 4runner buckets and prolly trying to weld a new cable stop onto the too long 80 series ebrake cable....this will let me ditch the tillers....it works great for now and I can lock her up on a pretty good grade;) got the oil pump, dizzy and oil pan back in place. working on vacuum lines and coolant clamps, then weld up the egr inlet on the pcv pipe and clean up the exhaust and install. then it's coolant fill and fire in the hole. gunna be tomorrow or the next day tho, the clock is ticking......;.

google small aircraft parts suppliers..... they use bowden cables like crazy and can make anything in any length for a nominal fee of course;)

IT'S ALIVE!!! it lives- growls.....gotta get a new muffler on it, but I ran her for 15 minutes at about 2000 rpm to set the rings. I can feel the cam even sitting still. there's at least twice as much power as there was before:bounce: might be back on the road by monday

FIRED UP

LAMBCRUSHER, glad its fired and running well. I knew you had a rough few days, so I would like to CHEER you up even more.
