When Toyota clocked the bell housing, they did away with the CD, not only a savings in parts, but I bet it shaved a few pounds of the truck, which may not seem like a big deal until you put 200 or 300 on a ship overseas.

Yes, but then you had to retool for a new transfer case shifter, retool for new bellhousing, retool for new trans crossmember, and frame mounts.
Would seem like one CD already in parts chain would be cheaper.
I'm going with a performance or fitment upgrade. Maybe it mattered moreso in a different model cruiser than the 60.
Even though I like the older bellhousing for off roading due to clearance issuses, the newer crossmember is easier to work on. Your crossmember has to match your bellhousing because of the angle of the transmission mount.
Lower bellhousing covers have changed along with the bellhousings. Covers for 2F BHs are symmetrical while those for 3F are asymmetrical due to the BH rotation. Discovered this when I tried to mount an '81 2F BH cover on an '86 3F BH.
Well I have apparently produced an epic fail. My H55 is stuck in 5th gear as far as I can tell. I had pulled off the tail section to seal it up better and must have screwed up the linkage or something. I pulled out the set screw and tried to play with it to get it free but no luck. I am sending her into a trans shop for this one. I just need to find one in an around Rancho Bernardo San Diego.
Did it work and then get stuck or has it been this way since you put it in?
About half of these get stuck in one or multiple gears during shipping. I had to pull mine back out after the install to fix it. It involved pulling the top cover and playing with the innards.
I never checked to see if it was stuck in a gear it could not get out of. I spun it but should have verified it would go to neutral. From what FJ60Cam said maybe it arrived this way. I was careful when I put the 5th gear back on and it looked right.
Cruiserdrew I appreciate the offer. I think time I will just have to have the shop do it. If I had more free time I'd probably pull it all out but I just don't.
Funny, the first time I did mine, Mudrak had warned me to shift through all the gears first, before install. I believe Toyota ships in 2nd gear to avoid this problem, but if it gets dropped or shipped in neutral, the shifter mechanism can get jammed into 2 gears at the same time.
Not clear what you did with the 5th gear and shifter mechanism?
I basically RTV'd the gasket on that extension housing. To do that you have to slide the shift actuator downwards. It's very easy and I was sure that the fork was on the syncho as it should be upon install. I have taken transmissions apart before and am very familiar with the innards. In fact, I was just out there, and it feels like 5th is shifting but third doesn't feel right.
I had the truck towed to Poway Transmissions. They worked the stick shift and got it unstuck from that gear and it works great. They didn't charge me a dime either! Loving this transmission. It's faster off the line around town and well the freeway is much quieter as I'm sure you can all guess.
One thing I can also add, I can see why they clocked the trans the way they did. 2nd gear is pretty much touching the leg of a taller driver. I don't care but I can see why with 5th being forward and more out of the way they would want to shift the whole pattern over a few degrees.
