Just a data point to this thread:

My 4/1985 build FJ60 has the "3F" marking on it but instead of being a direct fit, there was interference between the bell housing and the front bearing retainer on my new OEM H55F (33030-60450). I had to take a grinder to the bell housing to notch out the ear of the opening on the bell housing so that there was no interference between the front bearing retainer and the bell housing.

This lends a bit of credence to the number of different bell housing styles used during the entire run of the FJ60 for at least the US market.

X2 When I put a H55F in my 4/85 I had to clearance the 3F bell housing as well. I don't know if this is as much of an issue with the 3F bell housing or the front bearing retainer on the trans. Either way just a little work with the grinder and it fit up perfectly.

Interesting. Just for another data point, my 10/85 was a direct fit.

As it should be.

The gray area really is right there in the production change time frame in 4/1985-5/1985. That where you get manufacturing and supplier changes as well.

Well, I guess there's the change-over: H55f went into my 5/85 no modifications needed. We should do VIN #s on 5/85's ...

Again, I think its more about H55F front bearing retainer than the actual 3F bell housing. So it is probably more prudent to look into H55F production changes and mods. Just speculation on my part.

FIFO was not working properly...imo
