Just did 4 pan drain and refills. I'm at 65k miles ... fluid was dark red, but did not smell burnt at all. Worth doing for peace of mind.

Definitely piece of mind. I think if vehicle doesn't tow, lightly loaded. or life has been on fairly flat land conditions it won't be too bad. All bets off with towing, city, steep off-road or even mountain passes.

I've seen a few on GXOR in slow & go off-road...probably not in 4L get this one. Fluid temp was pushed to over 300 degrees. I have to look again but doesn't reset until below ~270 degree range. It is in a thread somewhere. I've yet to see anyone draining fluid on a 460 over 25K miles that is still translucent in any way.

In all the off roading and rock crawling, never seen this warning, either in my GX or previous Landcruiser. But this my be from folks who don't really now how to properly off road, meaning when and where to go into low-4, center lock, locking the diff's (if you have it), actually shifting the transmission, etc.
Serious off roading, not just fire trails, takes some knowledge and experience.

I am inclined to think this is the use of 4H in conditions that warrant 4L. A few that come to mind were out in heavy sand & driving slow on the beach and the another steep slow climb in mountains above 10K feet

Just returned from another weekend on the East side of the Cascades. GX fully loaded for the weekend including life support for our 70 lbs Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and two adults GX weighed in @ 7300 lbs. With this being stated driving up the grade to Washington Pass a summit of 5200' the trany temp peaked @ 230 for a brief moment. Then quickly dropped once cresting the summit. Trany cooler just jumped to the top of the mods list.

Install complete!

Sincere thanks to all the folks posting good info on here. Got it done in about 3 hours with a drain and replace of the fluid. Take a look at that color. 31000 miles.....

I can also confirm the part Acrad says not to order is correct.

Should be on a separate thread, but....

Any suggestions on when transfer case should be drained and the fluid replaced?

And what kinda fluid to use....
And I’m guessing someone might have a thread link ;)

I like to drain and fill every other year spring time usually, every 20,000 or so miles. Toyota fluids of course.

Received an email from Lexus Parts now that the #6 outlet hose has been discontinued. Being an outlet hose (low pressure) could standard fuel/vacuum line be substituted?

It's a Toyota part, so try a couple more dealers and see if you can find it (I got mine from Norwalk Toyota). Or Amayama shows that there are 2 in the UAE, so that's an option.

Just did a quick Google on that part (32943-35060) and it looks like one could just use some hydraulic hose? Unless a flexible hose can't make the bends that the factory hose has. But the bends don't look that extreme.
It'd be a heck of a lot cheaper!
