Why? What's the end goal of this conversion?
Good question. Fo me, it's 3 things.
1. GX460 gets high praise due to being all mechanial / hydraulic steering. For me, it's too stiff.
2. My 23 GX will be converted to do more heavy off-roading. I'm sure the standard rack is beefy enough, but many convert their racks to that of previous land cruise or Tundra racks for added strength and off-road reliability.
3. *** HUGE BONUS *** I live in the east, and much of my adventures are out in the west. I will be working with a developer to install Comma Ai. It requires 2 things only to work. a. Adaptive Cruise b. Must have EPS which can be controlled via Can Bus. For my 23 GX460 Luxyury w/ Off-Road Package, I have this, and only needs a EPS and comma ai will do the rest via CanBus
I have Comma Ai & Open Pilot installed on my 22 Ram 3500 high output AEV Prospetor XL, Lexus LC 500, and Honda Civic so far. The 'true' / full Level 2 autonomy driving powered by self-learning Ai is incredible / glorious. I don't use it everyday, but for loooooong highway drives, it's incredibly stable and drives better than me. Once you go this route, you can't go back. eat up thousands of miles on the interstate to get to my destinations. During the last 2 years alone, I've put in 56,000 miles on my Prospector XL exploring West, Canada & Alaska. Could not have done it without Comma Ai's auto-pilot system (using "Sunny Pilot" fork of Open Pilot). It's all open-source.
Latest software releases support full stop n go + stop light (stop / resume) + stop sign handling & full visual only lateral control (no radar needed). My search for an appropriate EPS steering rack for the GX460 search began last year, and looking to work with fab shops if necessary to install the EPS (likely needs mouting brackets and adpators). With the GX550 announcement, I've decided to hold off until we learn more about the GX550 steering rack to see if it would be a better rack more suited for the GX460 retrofit. If it isn't, given the same TNG flatform, then I won't have to wait too long, and just go with the Tundra steering rack (which already supports LTA). For those not familiar with the Comma Ai, here is proof of concept full end to end self driving demo (not fully available for all vehicles). If they can convert a Volkswagen Scooby-Doo van to full autonomy using Comma Ai, GX should be breeze. Just needs an EPS (if you have adaptive cruise) - Soon, once it goes full visual lateral control, then most likely you won't even need the adaptive cruise.
As I mentioned, I have this instlled on 3 cars now. Currently workng on my MDX Type S (23 model). I want to complete the conversion for the GX before the summer. That's the goal.
