'90 4Runner, new right front axle shaft and wheel bearings, but the bugger still growls intermittently IN 2WD haven't tried it in 4WD). Could it be the torsion bar or bar bushing? I couldn't re-create the noise by spinning the jacked up front tire, but maybe I didn't try it long enough.

It doesn't do it when hard turning going backwards does it, if so it might be the tires rubbing on the fender skirt  That's what mine does anyway with 31" tires. :)

Maybe, but it also does it running straight forward. 31's too. These Runners have got to be one of the highest riding rigs around in stock form. :)

Hmmmm, yeah it was just an idea, I was suprised the 31" tires rubbed, but it was just at close to full lock (sometimes going forward), and rubbed on the rubber/plastic fender skirt, I think that skirt just kind of warps a little bit over time. Still had good room before it rubbed against anything solid.
Good luck!

Sounds like the pinion or ring may be worn? How much slop do you have in the front shaft?

Haven't noticed any slop. Front axle shafts are free wheeling in 2WD, aren't they?

I was looking at one the other day and it looked like the bump stop was only about an inch from hitting as it sat there, ummm I thought, are they all like that?

did sit up nice though, but was full of cancer looked like it have never been oiled yet, lol
