Group buy: Aussie sliding windows

Ok Ok, time for an update I suppose. I just got back today from vacation in Hawaii, sorry no one heard from me while I was gone having the time of my life.

We managed to find 30 sets of windows in Australia, they should be leaving the docks today or tomarrow actually. We anticipate 30 (roughly) days to see them here. Sorry we are behind on this, unfortunately I did not expect so many people to join the buy, niether did the Aussies. We will be paying more for each set than anticipated, but everyones price will stay the same.

We have about 25 or so orders in the group buy, I know for a fact that all of the windows will not be usable, I wont know the exact condition until they get here. When they arrive I will let eveyone know, then go through them to see if we have any extra decent sets.

Ok - This question is in relation to all of you who ordered windows from Steve will have to figure out. To intall yourself or have a glass shop do it for you. I ordered a set from Steve last spring and finally got them cleaned up and ready to install and have gotten a quote to install of 75 bucks. Is this rediculous or am I getting ripped off? Is there a place to buy the buytle tape and eurethane sealant? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

$75 is fair

I used to work in a SAAB shop and installing windows is a major PITA if you don't have the right tools or haven't done it before.

It's kind of like drywalling - you can DIY it, but it is unlikely you will do it well or fast. Sometimes it is worth paying the pros.

Well I found out that it was 75 bucks a side, so I did it myself. I have found if I take things slow, I can usually do things better or just as good as anyone else. Bought the buytl for 5 bucks for 16' (takes 8' a side). and the 3M urethane sealant for 10 bucks a 10oz. tube (took 1.5). Shop around because some shops where trying to sell the urethane for 30 bucks a tube! Also will need the molding strip that goes around each door, I think the manual calls it a sash clip. I took lots of pics of the install process. If anyone wants them let me know and I will try to put together a word doc with pics and text.

Would appreciate your pix & instructions to prepare for installation of several pairs of windows. I offered to do it for $50 a side, plus urethane, or about $120 for the pair, plus tax.

If you're not used to working with automotive urethane it can be a problem. First, what you're gluing together must be very clean, and then you have to be careful not to get any excess on the body (the car's and yours). It doesn't come off once it's cured.

Something some of us mostly backyard mechanics sometimes forget is that professional shops guarantee their work. When you figure you saved $75 a side, consider the value of your time. Maybe the experience is really recreation, so you ought to pay to have fun. But if you have problems you'll have to do it over.

You didn't use the magic word "ripoff", so I'll assume you didn't think that when you were quoted. Some folks (not anyone on this board) don't understand how different people earn their livings.

No I didn't think I was getting ripped off with there quote. There was absolutely no disrespect on my part on people who make a living doing these sort of installs. I remember way back when I ordered these someone in one of the threads saying that it was cheap to have someone install them. After doing the install I have great respect for urethane after doing this job. I actually taped and masked everything on the outside of the window area I didn't want to get the urethane on. So glad I did it.

The one thing I love about this cruiser is the experience I get in doing most of the fixes myself. I spent 8 years in the army as a Apache and 58 mechanic. and this is one way to get my fix to work on mechanical things. Now if it was 35 for the someone else to do it I probably would have let the professional do it. I just had to weigh what I had in my bank account to my available time and I chose to do it myself.

I would say 50 a side plus urethane is a great deal! It took me about 4 hours, but I took my time to make sure I didn't screw it up. I will be glad to give you my pics, PM me your email and I will try to get that word doc together in the next couple of days. - Jim

On that note, how is the 3 window circulation with the aussie sliders installed?

I figure on paying about that much to have my windows installed. I need to have the seal around my windshield redone, and I'm sure I could do both myself, but since I haven't done it before, I figure it'll save me alot of aggravation to just have it done in case I end up fxxxing something up.

I installed the SOR sliders and with both open w/drivers window down the flow through the truck is incredible!

Offer I have out, as TopJimmie notes, is $50 a side plus urethane (about $120 plus tax, both sides). My main auto glass guy has been doing it for 20 years. I've been working on FJ60s for 15.

Maybe it'd justify a trip to Castle Rock, CO, just south of Denver, home of The Street Rod Manufacturing Co. (full-floating rear axle disc brake conversions) & 2BadFJs (aka SliderMan).

I have installed these before, they are way way easy. They basically glue into place and the weather stripping goes over and keeps it there. It will be much harder to remove the old window than install the new one..

That'd be cool, but I don't have the time (or gas money for that matter) to drive to Colorado, and flying's too expensive too. If I were able to drive to CO, next summer would be the earliest I'd be able to do it. I've got a wedding and honeymoon to save money for though
