Hey all, just joined the group today! I have had my 1985 FJ60, Stella, for about three years! I love this old "truck" and we have tons of fun cruising around in her.

I have been struggling with getting the tuning right since I got it, and out here in Vail, AZ there aren't many resources of people who know these things. It has a 13bt diesel swap that was done under previous ownership.

When I first got it, it didn't have enough power to get out of its own way. I've got it fueling much better now, albeit I think its running rich, but she easily cruises at 50mph, and can hit 60 under the right conditions. The smoke doesn't clear up until 4th gear, however, and I feel it should clean up much quicker than it does. I am able to get about 11psi of boost on the gauge and I feel like from what I've read I should be able to acheive closer to 15psi.

Just seeking some guidance from someone who may have some experience with these engines. If I lean out the fuel, it just doesn't have the power to get up to speed and the boost is substantially lower. Can I adjust the boost higher without turning the fuel down, and would this potentially help my problem? Anything would be much appreciated, thank you!

Not familiar with the 13bt turbo. You could turn up the boost but monitor your egt. What type of air intake does it have and does it have a bigger downpipe than stock? There is a diesel section in which you can post and maybe get more viewers.

Thanks for the reply,

The downpipe is larger than stock. I don't think the EGT probe is mounted in the correct location, it seems like its reading much higher temps than the turbo could handle without melting, reaching 1500degF at times. Looks like the stock air intake for the 13bt, it uses a round filter inside a sealed housing.

I don’t know much about either engine, but is it possible you have a 3b with a turbo installed on it?

Sounds like your engine needs to rebuild, those engine are very strong, but it gets older it's start slowing down, rebuild the engine or do a swap.

Take it to OLC 4x4 in Sonoita and have them check it out. @OGBeno

@claw84 I second going to see @OGBeno -san. Especially with your non-US 70 Series 13BT motor. That's rare knowledge in the states and OLC knows this stuff really well.
