My 94 Cruiser started doing this about a month ago. It only does it on highway trips at speed. It looks like it is spinning the greese out of the dust cap. I am thinking it just needs a new cap but I wanted to check with everyone to see what you think. Hopefully it is not to major!!! Here is a pic of the wheel.

Time for a knuckle job.

That is not what I wanted to Hear!!:) Where is the best place to buy a rebuild kit?? Man a fre??

I second CDan's diagnosis. Mine looked exactly the same. Save a weekend and knock it out.

As for the best place to get a rebuild kit......um....well i would ask CDan. He might know of a good supplier :flipoff2: .

oooolala!

PM Cruiserdan, he will get what you need at good prices, and his advice/experience with 80 series is invalueable.

firetruck41,

I see you are in Camas. You ever get you 80 out in the woods? Never seen you around. Let me know if you ever want to join me on a run. I am thinking about getting an 80 run together. I always see someone post from the northwest but I never see them out.

Just curious what the axle/knuckle side of the equation looks like?

Very dirty!

Yep, you've got it (birf soup). Not as much gooping on the knuckle as I had yet, but that's probably because yours is puking out the other side as well. Read up young grasshopper. BTW, notice any drop in gas mileage lately?

Do it NOW.

Get after it before you need a thousand bucks worth of stubshafts.

Where can I find some good writeups on how to do the job right? I will need to get a hub socket right?

Tim

Tech. write-ups, search function using keywords "knuckle" or Birfield, FAQ's. This is hands down the most thoroughly covered major maitenance topic on this site. You'll want to get an FSM too. 54mm socket for the hub, craftsman from sears or there are some other makes that will work.

Waldrtw,

200+ "non-chat" posts on IH8MUD and you don't know where to find a birfield write-up and you don't know where to buy a rebuild kit?

Do you read the forum or do you just post every now and then?

waldrtw, how do you like those x-terrains?

I hate them! Very weak side walls. Wearing very fast and they are falling apart!!

Tim

Thanks, that's just what i wanted to hear. I almost bought a set but went with the truxux mtrs instead. Love them even though they seem to wear a little quicker than i would like. You made me feel better about my decision.
