How are the knuckles? Trying to figure out if they are worth buying or just another bling item.

Haven't bought them yet - gotta do one mod at a time ;p I sent off my hydroboost unit to Vanco last week, so he should be finishing up soon :bounce2: Next big purchase will be the hydro steering system from PSC, then the knuckles will be last. I got my panhard brackets cut out & will be posting pics of it mounted soon.......

Panhard Mount Done:

I tried to use as much bracket to frame contact as possible, even took both brackets thru the frame & welded from the backside. This should do it ;p

Why the T-G knuckles? Run ARPs with the stock setup cheaper and just as strong.
I run the ARP studs. I did break 3 of them once. After speaking with Brian at FROR I believe the main reason I broke them was because I did not put enough locktite on them when I installed them. I had been wheeling in Moab and Colorado for 7 days and had not checked them like I should have. Returned home and wheeled locally and thats when they snapped. I have since replaced them with new ARP studs. I check my studs on a regular basis and haven't had any issues with them. I also run a hydro assist setup without a ram stop.

Here is some good info on comparing the knuckles and knuckle studs.

Good luck with the improvements Chuck. I am sure they will they make your rig stronger.

Onto The Updates:

I've know I've been slackin on the 40 but full throttle on the :pig: I've knocked the first 3 items off the list so gimme a break :flipoff2: ;p I have sloooowly been accumulating the rest of the parts for my brakes & steering. Now I just gotta plan some time for the install. I got the Vanco hydroboost unit, PSC ram & had a machine shop bore out the speedo housing for a stock dbl. seal. Don't know when I'll get back on this, but I do plan on wheelin' late summer or fall

Stop working on your pig and get back to work on this! Are you planning to go to GSMTR again this year and will you be ready to ride in the 40 or wil the pig be done?

:frown: Won't be at GSMTR this time. My :pig: is no where near done - front axle & suspension are the major things left to tackle. You are like a one man pit crew :D All that stuff you're doing would take me months...

My hi-flow P/S pump & PSC steering gear arrived so it's looks like I'll be :wrench: soon. I'll have an AGR Super BoxII steering gear & pump for sale if anyone's interested - good for tires up to 35" Next up will be the $ix $hooter knuckle$$$$

Nutha wheelin season has passed me by :frown: But, I'm really psyched about buildin up my :pig: As far as this 40 goes, I'm really on the fence about the Six Shooter knuckles vs. building up another hybrid LC center w/ D60 outers  :hhmm:

Negatives would be:
Lose my 30 spline Longs & 4340 drive slugs
Have to buy 8 lug front wheels

Positives would be:
Stronger D60 knuckles
Wouldn't have to use wheel spacers
Could go 35 spline inners/ outers - I'd cryo-rim treat the R & P
Already have D60 knuckle assemblies
Would need new inner custom shafts

I'd build it the same exact way as I did on my :pig:
Lemme know what ya'll think about my dilemma........

Go with the Land Cruiser center with D60 outers. Then you can sell the 30 spline Longs to me for cheap.

Really doing the D60 outers sounds like a lot of work but it should be easier the second time you do it.

It's the amount of fab work involved that really has me :hhmm: I'd have to redo all my front bracketry, take another rear LC housing & do all the mods to prep it, then the steering stuff. I'll let you know if I wanna part it or sell it whole

Nutha Hybrid Front Axle

I decided to bypass the :pig: today & give some luvin to my 40 ;p I picked up this REAR 40 housing from Mister Larry Downey last night & just had to get awn it. Got the ends cut off, relocated the diff drain to the bottom, patched that hole, & located a housing vent @ the top. Next, I'll relocate new slots where the ring gear passes thru the housing, on the opposite side, & patch the old slots. Then, I'll grind the ends a little to press on the Ebay D60 inner C's. After that, I'll reinforce the top & bottom housing w/ 2 X 4 X 3/16" wall square tube cut in half. I'm building this hybrid almost exactly as the one I fabbed for my :pig: Right now I'm not sure if I wanna go 35 spline cuz that means $$$. I'll reuse my RD02 ARB w/ 4:88's. The diff cover will be reinforced, similar to the Dynatrac style cover. I'll go w/ 4340 shafts so I don't lose any strength compared to the 30 spline Longs I'll be selling later.

Is the rear axle the same width as the front? Don't you want to go wider then just stock width if you were using spacers before?

Chuck,
This is a minor point in such a project, but how did you clean up the housing to raw metal so quick?

That was the easy part - 4" dia. knotted wire brush on a grinder. Blowing out the stuck center pin w/ my plasma & trying to salvage all 20 studs was :bang: <Bill Murray Voice> I think the Cruiser Gods were teaching me a little bit of a lesson not to merge LC stuff w/ Dana parts

Tanks dude! ;p

I trimmed the outer housing ends to fit the inner C's. I paid a machine shop to turn down the ends on the one I built for the :pig: Money wasted  It was pretty easy - 15 min. of grinding & whack 'em on. I set them w/ my angle finder, turned up the welder way high & burned 'em in. The D60 knuckles I'm using below are modified to run dbl. shear 3/4" cromo heims:

I have a question for ya. Was there any reason that you changed? Have you ever broken a toyota knuckle? Sweet either way keep up the awesome work.
