Got the Lean Cylinder code - how should I approach this? (1 Viewer)

Okay so here is the cap.

The plug wires are fxxxing 21 years old, they say 96. (Will replace) and yes I’ve had to add a little bit of coolant in the short time I’ve owned car. Also replacing the Bosch iridiums even though they don’t look bad.

I’m LEANING towards some head gasket problems at this point. (Get it? LEANING)

Triple post! Also the cap had some old gelatinous mayo s*** in there. Could’ve been miracle whip.

If you have 21 year old plug wires, I would think you should do that before you anything else.

You're trying really hard to conclude that it's the head gasket when it looks like you've got mostly original vacuum hoses on there. I think you've been NukeGoated.

I was told the cel read “cylinder 1 is lean”

To me it hiccups like a misfire. But it is sporadic. I have a slew of tune up parts arriving for both of my 80s tomorrow.

Hopefully the problem is resolved. We’ll fxxxing see.

What happened to nukegoat? I’m too new to get the reference but I’ve seen his mad max rig. @gummycarbs

I plan on replacing all of the vacuum lines sometime. They feel great compared to the ones I replaced on my 3fe. They were crusty bungholes.

A P0301 code is a cylinder #1 misfire. Could be spark, fuel, compression, etc. Ignition is easy, swap the plug and wire #1 and 2, if the code changes to a P0302, found it.

The nukegoat is an evil creature who prowls these forums, instilling terror into the minds of the uninitiated: irrational fear of impending head gasket failure. He also gives really good advice on 3-link setups and solid critiques of bad welds.

I can't recommend new hoses highly enough. That was, by far, the greatest improvement in the running condition of my '94, and easily the best return on investment. NTK (NGK) plug wires and a Toyota cap and rotor were nice, too, but leaking vacuum causes all kinds of problems. Lean running, excessive startup RPM, rough idle, high idle, all kinds of stuff. That, along with cleaning all the accumulated sludge out of the intake manifold, and carbon from the ruptured EGR modulator. It's like a whole different vehicle now.

Stock form as in copper wire? I have denso iridium, wondering if that would make any difference

I think stock is platinum but not sure. Since im running a SC I use copper plugs 2 heat ranges cooler.

While Iridium plugs last longer they don't cool as quickly and can lead to detonation especially on a boosted engine.

But in general Bosch plugs in a 90s era Toyota engine gives you issues. Seen it on different platforms

Replaced the plugs with standard plugs, replaced the plug wires, dist cap, and rotor.

Noticed that two of the plugs were only hand tight and had oil blow by.

I also ghetto fabbed my intake hose. Until my new one arrives.
(It was broken completely in half)

The engine is running as it should now, and I went back to double check the code that started all of this s***.

So I was completely fxxxing wrong! Land tank or somebody totally called it. In my defense I didn’t get to see the screen, I was only told the symptom.

Cleared that s*** and it has not come back after an extended drive.

Thanks for all of your input, tips, and help!

When my radio quits we are going to see if it’s head gasket related..
