Got my Scangauge II!

I ran it tonight in the 80 and added the Xguage feature. I guess the only gauge that we can really use at this point is the HP, which brings up a question. How does it measure HP and how accurate is it?

After setting everything up, I found that at idle, I would see as low as 7 h.p. which seems reasonable to a high of 245 h.p. at about 4500 rpm under a full load, which seems a little much. It seems to spike to 245 for a split second then settle down to around 235 in the mid 4000 rpm range. Of course, this is only for a few seconds, so its hard to get a good accurate reading. The highest GPH I saw was 14.5, I think.

The mileage feature was interesting. It confirmed something I suspected, that gas mileage even at a nice steady 25-35 mph completely sucks. I always thought it would be better, whenever I drive at lower speeds, my gas mileage in horrible. Get it up on the highway at 55-60 and its much improved.

I'll be interested to see how things fare with GPH and MPH on the highway at different cruise speeds like 60 or 70 or 80 mph.

I noticed that MAP doesn't work on the 80. It did on my Chevy work rig.

My only regret that I wish I could read more than 4 gauges at a time. Just out of curiosity it is possible to run two of these things off the same OBD plug? And here's hoping they can get the Toyota transmission temp codes to work.

BTW, has anyone with a supercharger or other mods tried out the HP? I wonder what other people's maximums have turned out to be.

Was wondering why they cannot pull the same information as a Toyota tech would ie: with the Toyota handtester? ie: thought that all the Toyota software was released a year ago?

Can this be hooked up to a laptop, and display more information?

The cable that connects to the Scangauge is an ethernet cable (RJ 45?). I don't know what would happen if you hooked it up to a laptop though.

You'll enjoy that scan gage! The different measurements are cool. You can calibrate it to your tire size (with a bit of math) so you can get true MPG.

I like it so I can clear the check engine light code when it pops up from time to time. That orange dash MIL lamp annoys me at night!!!

Has anyone been able to improve gas mileage with their 80 using the scangauge by adjusting the "nut" behind the wheel?

Yes. Or at least I'm more aware of my habits, which we all know, but rarely change. I did a loop last week from Bangor Maine to southern New Hampshire (to Cruiser Solutions) then to Burlington Vermont and back on rt 2 through the White Mountains.

The scanguage is a gentle (painful?) reminder of my right foot. I found myself lifting earlier to crest summits and being more gentle leaving intersections. Gas milegae was 15.2, which is higher than my usual average of 14.5.

But when I'm charging uphill passing those logging trucks, O/D off and Power On, the scanguage reminds me that is 2.4 mpg, and as I crest the hill and coast off-throttle, it ramps up to 25, 35, and then defaults to 9999 mpg, which always makes me laugh. Until I engage the right foot again, and reality hits.

Gas mileage and an overall trip computer is fun to be aware of, but the guage remains most valuable for specific water temp and self-diagnosing CEL codes. Those are the two main features I wanted to have in the field.

Just out of curiousity, have any of you noted what the scangauge reads for Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) when you are not on the gas pedal? Mine scangauge reads 8 when at idle or not on the gas pedal. In the manual for the scangauge it says some cars go TPS 0-100, others are above 0 when no throttle is applied and less than 100 at full throttle.

Just wondering what others are seeing for the 80 series?

Just got mine

I love it...My mileage has gone from 15 to 19 in a week. I did just replace my O2 sensors about the same time. I am still learning all the features but is does let you know how to adjust your driving habits.

i just ordered one.... where is the best place to learn how to use this bad boy!!

They come with a pretty detailed booklet. Lets you know how to properly program it and show true values. Like making up for larger tires and the such.

I must have an older version of the scangage from 2 years ago. Same functions it looks like, just slightly smaller. I used velcro on the top of the scan gage and placed anti-velcro under the ash tray area, seems to be a good spot. I like the trick of unscrewing the OBD connector to get the fuse cover back on, keep those fuses dust free. I like the MPG per tank and per trip, of course adjusted for larger tires scangage style. I guess the OBDII is an anvantage that the '95-'97's have.

Could any of you with a scangauge tell me what temps you get if after driving, you idle for 10 minutes in "DRIVE" ?

Driving around town I am at 184 F. I have only seen it above this once (195F) and it was a long trip that inviolved I-70 west of Denver. I am sure my recent rebuild has helped with the lower temps. And I know other trucks that run a bit higher.

Hi Ruadhrigh,

If you sit in "Drive" with foot on the brake for 10 minutes, does your temperature rise? If so - what to?

Mine doesn't rise in Park or Neutral - but in Drive, it seems to go up quite a lot if I sit there for 10 minutes in Drive

if you are in drive and stopped, you are spending power heating up the ATF so for sure your engine temp should go up to a higher equilibrium temp than in N -if the thermostat is already all the way open. If it's not all the way open, then you may not see the difference in engine coolant temp.

I will try this out for you. I am guessing you want the truck to already be at operating temp?

Hi Ruadhrigh,

Yes - that is 10 minutes in Drive after it is already at operating temp - Thanks VERY MUCH!

I'm sorry I misread your request :o

I sat in N for ten minutes

I'll try again tonight. What temperature are you wanting to see? The scanguage will only tell you the Water Temperature, and the Intake Air Temperature. Unfortunately no Tansmission temp.

Hi Ruadhrigh,

Sorry - I mustn't have been clear enough :(

To be clear, Water Temp is what I am interested in with 10 minutes of idling after it is already at operating temp in "DRIVE" :)

Thanks very muh for this - I appreciate it.

1 more thing - with Air Con turned on.
