My 92 80 series land cruiser when I accelerate shortly after starting the vehicle (still warming up), I'll hit like a wall on the pedal and even when I increase pressure there's more resistance but the RPMs and speed don't change... Until eventually it revs up a ton and then the transmission won't change gears unless I really ham on it and then the rest of the drive the transmission behaves poorly. When I give it time to warm up, it doesn't do this. Also putting Lucas transmission fix helped a ton but not entirely. I've already had a shop flush the system and change the pan filter, which helped for a little bit and then stopped helping. Wondering if I need to have solenoids replaced, look at TPS or shift sensor, or just accept that my trans is on its way to the grave?

friend had the same and changing solenoids fixed it. Take it to a proper transmission place, and not one that is going to screw and screw you into overhauling the entire trans (unless it needs it). I assume you've checked the adjustment of your transmission kickdown cable too? Though I doubt this would cause the issues you've mentioned.

Try the manual shifting test. It will help determine if it’s the shift solenoids.

Yeah I tried adjusting it. Any specific write ups you'd recommend looking at? I always feel like I'm doing stuff wrong. I bought the 4 solenoids and I'll try and take a stab it at soon here.

I am having the same issues on a hydro A442F. Any suggestions would be appreciated. As Bencho said it happens when transmission is cold.

highly recommend you download the Toyota service manual (FSM). All of the testing procedures, adjustments, tolerances are contained within.

the throttle kickdown cable adjustment:

The little metal bead is supposed to protrude out from the orange boot by 0-1mm. However, given the age of these vehicles, most people's cables are stretched, and you'll need to go by feel, as opposed to the above.

The cable shouldn't be tight, but also should't have a lot of slop.

What the Throttle Kickdown Cable Does on the A442F:

It tells the transmission how far the accelerator is pressed, helping it decide:

- When to downshift under throttle load
- When to hold lower gears longer during hard acceleration
- How much line pressure to apply (affecting shift firmness and clutch engagement)

On my vehicle, the transmission was still relatively smooth, but I had to basically mash the accelerator hard to the floor to get it to change down gears. Now it will change down gears with a much less accelerator pedal angle, and shifts are crisper and more direct.

I don't actually think this is going to solve your specific problem though.. but by flushing and replacing the ATF and adjusting this, you've at least done 2 important service items. I'm not expert on transmissions, but work through the troubleshooting section in the FSM (you can download in the resources section on this site), and do all the related testing to try and identify the issue. I'd be cautios of driving around the vehicle too much while you attempt to solve this, as you risk doing damage.

Link to FSM (not sure if your specific model, but all are saved in the same resources area):

Cheers,
Pete
