I hate to pull the motor it’s great but I don’t want to sell out of state. Sounds like an engine swap?

Assuming you’ve got good compression and the mounting bosses on the block for the PS pump to be moved, you’ll need a 61040 head (good luck) and a 3 groove harmonic balancer to get the ball rolling. Chances are your intake and exhaust manifolds are not setup for EGR, so those will need to be swapped. Then a US distributor, carburetor, air cleaner, air pump, air rail, EGR...and a LOT of hoses.

Not sure what I’m willing to spend. I was planning on putting in an H55 5 speed tranny and overhauling the power steering and replacing the suspension. I am willing to spend 5-10k to get it CA compliant but I could see expanding that a little for the engine. Anyone know how much to put in a cummins?

5 sp in a central American rig
no frame damage?? is the owner saying that or the guy that installed the rear shackles?

the owner probably went out and rolled it after finding out how much is was going to cost to get it registered in CA

There are many threads of folks who did not understand CA smog requirements before purchasing that once in a lifetime vehicle. Many owners gave up after finding the cost outstripping the value (and price) of the vehicle.

You will spend more than the up to $5k you mention. An engine swap is no better as you still have to meet the same year smog requirements, and CA smog referees virtually stopped approving swaps. @orangefj45 could provide more info. A diesel swap also has to meet smog requirements and that's even more difficult to figure out for a vehicle that never existed in the US.

Contact Mudrack's Custom Cruisers in Sonoma also. Gary has been in the game a long time.

I wish you good luck, I really do. But you have a hard and frustrating road ahead to make it legal in CA.

Thank you, for the recommendation.
the law however clearly states that if may if you put an engine in a no compliant vehicle that is as new as the vehicle with all of its original smog equipment, and it passes the test then it may be licensed. That’s pretty black and white. Never heard anyone say before that they quit allowing engine swaps. I think they happen all the time, but maybe I’m wrong.

If you decide to switch engines, even an 75 motor, smog requirements are based on the frame/vin #’s. So you need to do your homework about possibly going to a SB with all the smog equipment. I don’t believe you will be able to get that 85 motor smogged no matter what you do.

Thanks for the emails and pics!

We have successfully gotten a similar vehicle to pass smog here in CA. As Mark mentioned, there's a lot that goes into the work/process including building a custom harness for all the electrical/electronic emissions components as well as exhaust and other "fun bits".

Please call me back today at the shop ( at your convenience ) and we'll talk about your project some more.

It all depends on the interpretation of the smog referee. My info is from various folks who have spent a lot of time, effort and money only to have the smog ref interpretation of what is required kill the project. I hope I'm wrong.

Just chatted with @dynosaur about this on Sunday. Agree with his advice 100%: TALK TO THE REFEREE FIRST.

Buy a cummins 2.8 diesel and all will be fine.
Not in California.

Not in California.

do you mean this new modern engine is in compliance in California ?

I’m thinking even if you did find used smog equipment, and even if the stuff accidentally fit your rig, the used smog equipment you find stopped working many moons ago. Soooo, I have to vote for a late model engine swap.
