I'm trying to clean up a few loose ends from the paint job and have a question for anyone with a Gen1 4Runner. The lowering torsion bar ends (outlined in red on diagram) go into the bottom of the tailgate a few inches from each side. Does each end go through a rubber grommet or do they just go into the bare metal holes?

Second question, there are two identical sized holes a few inches to the inside of those two holes. Are they just plugged with rubber plugs? On the diagram there is a plug, part number 90950-01452 which may go into those holes. It's discontinued so no help but it's no problem to get a plug or a grommet at the local parts place.

Thanks!

The torsion bars go through little plastic grommet things, but mine always pop out because the bar does not stay centered in the hole as the gate goes up and down... I don't know about the other holes, but I be they are just plugged like you're thinking...

Check inside the tailgate itself, most times if the rubber grommets around the tailgate aren't visible they've fallen inside.

The other holes just inside of them are usually plugged, I'll see if I can find a pic of the plug type, it's basically the same plastic things as inside the 2nd-Gen Runner doors. Pretty much one of these.

*As long as you're gonna be in there clean out the drain slots with soap and water and spray down some frame saver or wax seal of some sort.

I have the tailgate off of the Runner that I'm parting out (someone is buying it today) and I can go snap a pic if you want.

The paint shop took them out (if they were still there). They stripped the tailgate down completely before they sprayed it. If there were any grommets there at the time, they aren't there now.

That would be helpful. It's sounds from Jerod's reply that it's just a grommet. As I said earlier I can get some generic ones from the parts house and try to make them stay.

One more question. The 4Runner isn't here for me to take a picture but if you open the tailgate and look down from behind it, the wires attach to the bottom left. About 6" to the right of where the wires attach (with that odd shapped protective cover) there is a small hole. Any help with what goes there would be most appreciated as well. I can't find that hole on any of the diagrams.

Here's an old pic that I found showing the location. The 4Runner isn't here right now but I can take a better pic tomorrow if need be.

im not sure i understand your question.

the wiring harness comes from the left rear quarter, into the tailgate underneath that plastic clip thingy, which is held in place with two screws.

then the wiring harness splits up once inside the tailgate and the thing you have circled in red is a clip from the inside that holds the wiring harness to the tailgate.

whats in the pic looks right to me.

Except I can't tell what's in the pic. That's an old pic and the tailgate (fresh from the paint shop) now has an empty hole in that location. Sounds like I need to go into the tailgate and see if there is a clip still connected to the wires that I need to push into that hole from the inside.

You did answer my question. Thanks!

:D Bryan beat me to it. It's the pop clip that's taped into the loom that keeps it from flopping around. Heck, lube your window track and gear arm too just in case the body shop didn't.

oh...yeah the clip is taped into the harness. so it should be attached still unless it was mutilated when they took it out.

X2 on the lube, mine was kind of slow but not too bad. last time i was in there i rubbed a little high temp brake grease on both sides of the teeth of the window gear (high temp so it doesnt drop goopy shiz on your glass when it gets hot)..and now its like im off to the races...way better now.

edit... for the rubber tracks (aka window runs), spray in some silicone lubricant spray. it evaporates, but makes the rubber still stay greasy. it comes in aerosol can and is available at most part stores.

Sorry. The guys beat me to it already. It is just a clip that locates the harness inside the gate.

OOOOOOOohhhhhhh burn.....you just got told whats up son!!
..he called your tailgate dirty....you gonna take that shiz??

lol.

really though, that is what happens when you get a forum filled with people who actually know what they are talking about. quick accurate results. unlike some other forums

and i like the fact that we can joke with each other instead of cussin eachother out and wasting server space with garbage, unlike another forum.

Well I ordered what I thought were the parts for the holes in the side of the tailgate but it turns out that what I ordered actually went under the tag.

Here's a pic. So what goes there? Once again I cannot tell from the diagram and neither can the parts guy at the local dealer.

i can look tonite and see if i have anything in those holes on mine...

btw- what were the part numbers for the tabs that go under the license plate? i need to order those as well.

sweeeeeeeett.....see i looked at that same drawing a few weeks back trying to order those things, and i couldnt tell if that was a "inside the tailgate" part or not...

good lookin out.

wardamneagle,
looked at my truck last night. nothing in those holes either....maybe they are access holes for a screw / bolt?

maybe something to do with the window regulator or track??
