Recently I did the birf repacking job in my FZJ80, I had done this job previously in my FJ60.
I noticed that on the FZJ80 there was some sort of gear on the outside of the birf on the narrow side of the bell shape.
It does not look like these gears mesh or engage with anything else in the inside of the birf housing.
I don't remember the FJ60 having these.
What is the purpose of these on the FZJ80?
I am just curious about this.
Also what would a good source for getting a couple of birf to have as spares?

Thanks,

Antonio

The ABS sensor uses it to "magnetically" (I think) read the wheel/axle movement to do it's ABS calculations.

for spare birfs, either go to a wrecker for used or pay full freight from C-Dan. So far there is no reliable aftermarket birf for an 80. We are hearing rumours about a new aftermarket model from Longfield but I remain skeptical.

If you are talking about the attached gear in pic, then yes, that is the ABS ring. Be sure to remove it and re-use it as they are not available seperately and longfield plus all the other mfgs don't produce them.

may I say an ebay vendor who does not identify himself and has a 14 sale track record is not a manufacturer from whom I will readily purchase a part that is critical as a birf and takes as long to remove and install.

odd thing is that the early 80 birfs where diffrent than the later ones. The early ones had shorter splines on the stub axle and won't fit the later axles and vise versa. You would think he would know that and either offer 2 different joints or at least make it known on his auction.

Let me translate that for the board.

Test, N. A method used by Christo whereby he over-stresses the drivetrain until the weakest link breaks.....Often accomplished by winching in one direction whilst driving in the other........:D

actually, he is the weakest link, but we try not to remind him of that too often :D
