Cruisers at Local Show

A friend seme these pictures from an auto show in Atlanta. These Cruisers are very nice so I thought you may know the owners and appreciate seeing the pictures.

So how cool is this? Why don't you tell us about these things Larry?

Yes, that was the car show. Plus, the pictures of the Russian speed boat looked like a real crowd pleaser.

Ted,
What do you want to know about it? They are interesting and this is a big step for the Navy towards someday having a UCAV that could operate off a carrier.

I assume this was fully autonomous and not performed by a human pilot sitting in a dark secret basement somewhere. You know much more about it than I do but the technology is simply incredible, the ability to land on a rocking aircraft carrier is just too impressive. No doubt the days of a pilot in the aircraft are numbered.

Question is: what's out there that we don't know about?

Ted, I'm a little insulted you wouldn't think to ask this question of an active duty member of the US Navy! :meh:

I seriously doubt that is the case. Most UAVs are still remote control. Certainly that technology is in the works, but in my best guess, it is not likely the case here.

A LOT!!
I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you! :flipoff2:

don't be buddy! Hug it out!!

Just asking this question put you on the list....

I was on that list a long time ago, I like to push the boundaries a little.:flipoff2:

By the way, they already have unmanned helicopters that they use on smaller decks.

One U-bolt and, ummmm... one "something else".

Ted,
If there are things out there that we don't know about, then their security is working.

It is my understanding that this has fully autonomous control. As a highly swept tail-less (i.e., no vertical control surfaces) flying wing configuration that is intended to eventually fly supersonically, the blending of the flight control surfaces for full stability in all three axes is an amazing thing of work. Then you increase the complexity by adding the autonomous flight control aspects, it get very challenging.
One aspect I read about some time back was control on the deck. The vehicle needs to move on the aircraft carrier deck with precision. Normal flight control systems and requirements are not as demanding as movement on flight deck crowded with other vehicles and people, plus it has to connect to the catupult shuttle which requires tight positional tolerances.

Also, this test was fairly easy since it was conducted in a low sea state where there was very limited variation in deck movement. The later tests in higher sea states will wring out how well the closed loop control will work plus even the mundane (like hook engagement characteristics and cable dynamics with the vehicle configuration).

Nice write-up! YouTube wouldn't play the video for me for some reason so I didn't realize it was a design I hadn't seen. So, that being said, and in light of that awesome informational, I'll retract my statement about them being remote controlled.
