FZJ80 O2 sensor Replacement (1 Viewer)

I just had to replace my O2 sensors on my Cruiser. The nuts holding the old ones in place were extremely corroded. They were no longer 6 sided. I bought some liquid wrench and sprayed them every few hours the day before I had replace them. I still couldnt get them off so I bought some Irwin Bolt extractors hoping against hope they would work and they worked like a charm. They locked on and it felt like I was using a good socket on a good nut.

I also used the Denso O2 sensors replacing the Factory sensors. They actually are physically different in shape and construction. I have not seen any difference in MPG since I changed the sensors a few months ago.

The upstream (front) Denso # is 234-4157 & downstream (rear) # is 234-4153. I've found them for $101.01 for both including shipping. I think my front O2 is about to crap the bed. Consensus is that Denso is OEM or @ least equivalent. OEM in a Toyota box is about $100 for just the front O2 sensor. I had good luck on my 4Runner using Denso. Should I go OEM or Denso?

Upstream Denso will work just fine on your 97. I purchased the one from Rockauto last year and its been good to go. If you have a 93 or 94 don't waste your time with anything but the OEM units, you will just buy twice.

I used denso sensor for front and rear on my 96 and my 97. Both work great, no codes and a tiny bit better mileage.

One other question..., did you have to order new nuts from Toyota or do they come with the new sensors?

The sensors only come with a gasket, no nuts.

Mine threw an O2 code just before I ordered them. It's been 1.5 years since I installed them & have been trouble free since. No, nuts aren't included.

I had a lean mixture code that kept popping up. I replaced the upstream with one of these O2 sensors and the code never came back.

Great looking kit, but it doesn't appear to have a 12mm. Is that not the one you need?

If you don't have a CEL on I wouldn't bother. Mileage benefits may be illusory, or very slight.

O2 sensors will degrade over time without setting codes or complete failure. I would change them if you are seeing lower performance or a drop in fuel mileage.

sorry was referring to the differences in advice between yourself and the previous poster.

no records that the O2 sensors have been changed , 183,000 miles. when I first got the vehicle I was on a road trip and it appears one sensor came off, lost power took it to a shop and the guy said he welded the base back on- I was new to LCS at the time.

I'm getting about 200 miles per tank close to empty. 11-12 miles per gallon, no armour or winch. pretty light these days actually.

I'm not familiar with Canadian fuels but here in US fuels are reformulated in winter reducing mpg. City driving is also going reduce the mpg. In my case, 94 model with bumper/winch with 2.5" lift running 70 to 75 mph on the highway I consistently will get 14.5 to 15 mpg. Adding the supercharger made little difference. The 95-97 ODB2 models will do better with other members I recall reporting 17+ mpg under similar conditions. The 93-94 models require more frequent O2 sensor replacement than do the 95-97 models but consider them "wear" items. They will not last forever.
