At some point in the future, say 5-10 years from now, I will do a complete restore of my 1982 FJ40. It is in fairly good condition, was cleaned up (I hesitate to say "partially restored") by CCOT when I bought it. It only has 65k original miles on it and originally came out of Colorado I believe. It has some light body rust beginning to show under the paint at joints and some edges. Heavier rust on the underneath of course. It lives in a garage in Michigan, sometimes driven in winter but not often - damp and salt on roads here obviously. Given that some parts are already difficult to get I keep wondering that when the time comes if I'll be able to find the things I need. Though until then I don't REALLY know what I'll need. I am curious what parts I should try to locate asap rather than waiting until the time comes. I am not going to buy everything for a new truck and store it for 5-10 years, but would like to know what I had better locate now, and also have a timeline for what to acquire as time marches on. Any advice?

I think the reality for most people is that it ends up taking 5-10 years to do a complete restoration, so if you start now....

I like driving it at the moment so am not eager to start taking it apart... And I hope it doesn't take that long to do it when the time does come!

Anything you can afford, best get and store now. Fuel pumps being one thing that comes to mind, mirrors (arms are already gone), turn signal units (on fenders). But who knows what will be reproduced to original quality at that time like what @Racer65 makes now...top quality stuff that is as good or better than original. Good luck!

Better get all the weatherstripping, rubber parts, emblems, front signal, tail lamps, plastic parts, possibly dash pad. Some of the mentioned items has been discontinued, more will go it is just a matter of time. In fact a lot of the 60 series parts has been discontinued and even 80 series is following the same faith lately!!

Where can I get the weatherstripping (and rubber parts) from?
Thanks,

I do carry them with great discount or you can always get them from dealer or mud vendor such as Dan or Beno.

This is a good topic that's relevant to all of us, whether we undertake a resto or not. I'd say OEM wheels and hubcaps if that matters to you. I'd pick up the upper and lower thermostat housing, sun visors, dome light, coolant / windshield washer bottles...basically anything you don't see an aftermarket supplier supporting today. Life will get tough when all of these parts become discontinued.

I'm not so much worried about weatherstrippings, because aftermarket suppliers can fill the void.

I would make a list of everything you will need. Go over each part of the car with a notepad and write down the parts that need to be replaced. Then start to search. You will quickly find out what is available and what isn't. With such a long time frame, you have time to get a feel for the market and search for good used stuff. Many of the parts I was planning on replacing, were actually restorable with some elbow grease.

Once you start DO NOT throw anything away. One mans junk is another mans treasure.

I'm not so sure.... just because its available doesn't mean you should use it. There is not a good quality aftermarket product as of right now.

for weatherstripping, you guys talking about the wide piece under the windshield? Or the stuff between the hard top panels? that's what I would get.. maybe a dash pad too if yours is cracked.

Also those three little rubber pieces at the bottom of the dash- they are getting scarce already, or at least wicked expensive.

Nakman,

The 3 little rubber pieces at the bottom of the dash. Are you talking about the lower dash pads? If so we manufacture them as well as the upper dash pad.

Sorry for the shameless plug there but I still see these lower dash pads purchased on ebay for outrageous prices.

The FJ40DASH pads @fjgoober mentioned. I have a full set of them, and they are N-I-C-E. Here, have a look.

The seals around my doors (driver, passenger and rear) are bad. I think CCOT put on some aftermarket ones that are not very hefty and don't seal the doors well at all. I hear lots of air noise and if I spray it with it hose I have to towel out the inside for all the water that goes in around the seals. Are there good door seals available?

Tom,

I don't know about the window seals, but if you haven't already done so, a good place to start looking is under FAQ Frequently Asked Questions. It's a sticky at the top of the 40 & 55 Series Tech Forum. Tremendous amount of information there. Poser has done a pretty good job categorizing everything. I didn't see anything regarding door seals but I may have overlooked it.

Worst Mod and Best Mods are pretty interesting reading.

Good Luck

Might want to check out the unobtainium thread and pick up some things you anticipate needing. These things do take time unless you have an endless budget..............welcome! Racer 65 has some great stuff BTW

Tom,
FWIW - If you have the means, always purchase OEM parts. There may be a few items here or there that aftermarket is better, but not much. Anyway, here is an EPC (electronics parts cataloge) for your '82 FJ40 ----> "Toyota/Lexus" <---- ...From that, you will be able to find part numbers for items you need. Check with @beno or other MUD members for discounted OEM parts.

As far as the door weather stripping, they are part numbers 67861-90300 & 67862-90030 (8/80 - 10/84)....I believe the OEM units are still available. (note, OEM window channels are available as well)
