I drained my tank in my FJ40. The rubber gasket is intact on the bottom of the tank (I left it in place, since it didn’t come off with the plug). Is the any sealant I can/should use on the plug when i reinstall it to ensure I don’t have leaks? Is anything recommended or useful?

Thanks!

That's a non-reusable seal. Get a new one. It seals without sealant.

what year tank? different size plugs for different year ranges

Yep, I posted the one for mine, because I knew it. Could be different...

I thought the seal was discontinued/ unavailable?

It is if you have a 1/79 or newer. Seal, plug and tank are NLA from Toyota. Best answers come with month and year of your cruiser. They look similar but the FJ40s are not one size fits all.

I am glad i didnt read this thread before cutting up my tank for efi pump. I had to drain and the plug seemed like it had a tar like sealant. This was a NOS tank i had bought a few years ago.

Anyhow, re installed plug with whatever sealant was on it, tested with a little gas and it held. Still no leak a few months later. Got lucky.
