Hey guys, I am over here from the 40 side.

I just bought an 88 FJ62 thinking it needed a brake line replaced.

Well the starter just clicked so I rebuilt it, thanks to hodag and zcruiser for the great writeup.

Now I can't get fuel to the fuel filter, well my question is can you normally hear the fuel pump run? Most fuel pumps start when the key is in the run possition, but I only get power when the key is in the start position.

Thanks in Advance,

You should hear it run. BEFORE you go replacing the fuel pump. There is a wire in the drivers rear quarter panel that goes bad MORE than the fuel pump does. If you have a FSM it is the hot wire for the fuel pump....check it first. I cannot remember the color code now.

Power is a red wire w/green line and blue hashes. The negitive is white with a black line.
I have verified that power is to the pump plug.

I see someone had soldered wires inline with the pump and the fuel gauge.
When I saw that I thought I had found the problem but, no such luck.
That must be the problem area you are talking about.

Sounds like the pump is bad.

Thanks,

Excellent.

You cutting a hole in the floor or dropping the tank?

If I can get a general area, I will be cutting a hole.

I can see getting a fuel pump and then something else not working.

You will see the cover plate for the float..the hole you want to cut is to the right. About a 5 x5 cut. A wheel cutter is fine as long as your careful.

Great, Thanks a bunch.

DudleyFJ40,
I just went through every possible part of the fuel system dealing with the fuel pump. Search my name and the thread will come up. Give me a call with any questions for direct answers, any time of day is ok.

I am going to get to it tomorrow. It is at the parents farm an hour away. I will keep you up on it.

Thanks,

WOW>>>>>>>I mean WOW...................is that dirt and/or sand? That pump looks like a oceanic discovery from some ancient wreck. Replacing that should help.... No?

Gravel Dust! And Yes, replacing it did help.

That wire is the ground that it needs to run. I saw that laying in the tank.

Clarification. Turning the key to the "on" position will not run the fuel pump. The switch needs to be in the start position, and the ECU needs to detect the engine is running. If the engine stalls, the fuel pump will stop.

You can run the pump with the key in the "on" position if you short the FP and +B terminals in the diag box.

Dudley those pictures are insane. I can't believe it still ran looking like that!

if the fuel pump looks like that i wonder what the tank looks like. If it was me i would be dropping the tank and cleaning it out and figure out where all that junk is coming in from.

mwalls54 has a good point. Your fuel filter could probably use a change too.

i would do that for sure. I read in the other thread that this is your daughters. It wont take long for that new pump to suck up some of that gunk and leave her stranded on the side of the road.

Cruisers run on mud.

Hence: IH8MUD.

Drop the tank, and get it cleaned out. Heck, if it were me I'd get a new tank, flush the lines (if not replace), change the fuel filter, spark plugs, and run fuel line cleaner for a few thousand miles...
