Fuel pump recall

Picked mine up today with the 3rd pump. Dealer replaced the recalled pump with the new one. Turned out it was defective and they dropped in another. Took about 24 hours before the call that it was done and we were happy to return the 2020 Highlander loaner.

From what I read from the attached spec info my 2015 LX 570 they can do it with almost full tank of gas since it doesn’t look like they remove the gas tank but it’s different with different vehicles
They told me the same rig needed as little fuel as possible...

And? How long did it take?
The work order showed I think around two hours labor I dropped it off at 3 o’clock in the afternoon yesterday and they called me at 3 o’clock in the afternoon today to pick it up but they had a lot of stuff going on they gave me a nice brand new GX 460 to drive so I didn’t care

I looked it up on what they needed in 2015 you could almost have a full tank I talked to the service advisor about it when I drop the car off and they said yeah not a problem they go through the floor above the gas tank they don’t have to take the gas tank down it’s just The fuller the tank the more gas fumes and the longer it takes for them to air the vehicle out before they give it back to you

That makes sense. I'm getting the water pump done at the same time. My idler wheels make a ton of noise episodically so I went for the max cost option.

Weird. Took about 2 hours. They went from the underneath, and had to take the armor off...

So did anyone ever confirm that ARB or other drawers have to be removed for the repair? I have one ARB drawer in the back that I would rather not have to remove and don’t want the dealer messing with.

If it’s covering the access to the gas tank it would have to be removed because on our vehicles they go in from the top they don’t drop the tank.

Doesn’t this depend on the MY of the vehicle? I have a 2019 with full ARB drawer system. I sure hope I don’t have to remove and reinstall everything....

I called the dealer that I chose to do the repair and asked, he asked his techs and he called me back and said they go in from above, but this is a '15 LC. I also have the full drawers system, plus there is a lot of wiring that will need to be disconnected. So I'm waiting until the spring, when I have a few more projects planned for the rear, and will be taking it all apart anyway.

What's the difference between 2013 and 2014-2015? 2013 does not have recall where as 2014-2015 have. My understanding was that between 2013-2015 nothing changed.

Nothing changed on the vehicle. Not to say some manufacturing defect etc could not be found on a suppliers part.

I just had my fuel pump replaced under the recall on my 2014 and everything went very smooth. I called a week in advanced and they advised that the had to order the part and scheduled an appointment. I dropped off my Cruiser at 8am and they called me at 3pm to tell me it was all finished. FYI, I ran my truck down to 30 miles below the "low fuel" warning before I dropped it off. They told me it had to be less than a quarter tank or they wouldn't perform the work. It's always nice to have service completed by the Toyota dealership and not have to pay for anything.

Interesting since the 'Technical Instructions' for Safety Recall (20TA02) indicates that the Land Cruiser fuel tank just has to be 'less than full'.

If not 'less than full', the dealership could drain fuel from the tank to avoid overflow from the fuel tank during the removal of the fuel suction assembly.

It would be even nicer to have a reliable vehicle that doesn't have any of these maddening recalls.

Eh. Decades ago the same problems existed, there just wasn't a recall unless it was extremely widespread and risked fire or complete vehicle failure. Fuel pumps failing at 100k were just chalked up to a crappy part. Nowadays you see recalls for all sorts of stuff with very liberal ties to "safety". Honestly I'm more frustrated that Toyota WON'T recall their crappy radiators.

Silver lining - if you have a 2014 with 150k miles on it you just got a new fuel pump for free!

The gas tank on my 2015 was 7/8 full when I took it in because of reading this I knew it didn’t have to be anything but less than full they agreed did the work no problem.

You are right, of course, I was just tossing out a snarky post. Pisses me off that I gotta pull out my drawers and all the wiring for this repair. Not that I would let them, but I wonder what would happen if I just made them deal with it. I wonder if they would refuse? Curious...

I have been in the hatch to access the fuel pump on my prior 200, and while I did not have my rear cargo boxes installed at the time, looking back, I think I could have done the job with them in. Once you remove the second row seats, and pull the carpet away, you have to remove some plastic ducting, and then you are at the hatch (under where the second row passenger would be sitting). I couldn't swear to it 100%, but I'm reasonably sure rear cargo boxes wouldn't get in the way of this job, if they are going in from the top.
