My fj40 has been sitting for around 25-30 years. It still has the original fuel pump and it will not pump. I have removed the fuel line from the carb and poured gas down it to try to prime it and still nothing. How long should I turn the engine over before i accept that it needs a new pump?

Back in the mid 80's I went to an electric fuel pump for several reasons. I bought the block off plate from man-a-fre; should have made it myself. I like the cheap diode ones on ebay for less than $20 delivered - they last me like a decade.

I can just pull the hose off the carb and fill my gasoline lantern or stove after turning on the switch - no leaking gas cans to deal with.

I made my own fused, filtered gas transfer pump for less than $50. It will also work with diesel. 5' draft hose with 20' delivery. 12' power lead that will plug into cig lighter or clamp on the battery itself.

If it's been sitting that long, have you drained the tank and looked inside? Could be rusty and the pickup could be clogged. Fuel pump is a rubber diaphragm, so probably bad, but you can test them pretty easily with some extra fuel line once disconnected from carb and filter.

Post some pics of your 40 that's been sitting 30 years, would love to see it!

^^ Yeah. Easy to do a quick test: If you have a gas can with fresh fuel, and some extra fuel hose, remove the fuel line from the pump that goes toward the tank and hook up a temporary fuel hose that runs to your gas can. Crank the motor and see if you get any fuel to the carb. I believe OEM fuel pumps are still available.

I actually put a new tank and new fuel lines in it. Also here's my 40 it was sheltered for the past 30 years.

As another option, I believe Cruiser Cult, a vendor on the forum, sells fuel pump rebuild kits.
Indeed we do. Easy project honestly. :)
