I pulled a perfectly fine 20R out of my Celica and swapped-in a 22RTE. Everything is done except the fuel line. I'm totally ignorant about fittings. I need to adapt the stock "bubble" flared hard line to the 22RTE fuel filter. What is the safest way to do this? Cut-off the "bubble" and re-flare the hard line? Or, can I just hose clamp a rubber line and find a banjo barb at filter (I know I need FI clamps for this)? Any other ideas? I've never flared a tube before...

Can you cut the line from the RTE chassis and just slide it over and use a band clamp or two?


and where are you? I know you're too far for me, but the head off that 20R motor would be nice. :D

Which line; the chassis hard line or flex line? I have the flex line to the filter (it's too short and has an unknown fitting on it). I don't have the hard line from the 22RTE chassis, and this is going into a Celica, so I don't think that would help. The Celica hard line runs through the transmission tunnel and has about 1,000,000 bends in it. I don't want to replace it.

I would sell the 20R head, but the rest of the engine would come with it. :p I'm in GA, will be driving to CO next week, then to Knoxville, then back to GA. Carrying an engine around for the entire trip would not be fun.

OK, I re-read. I get it.

The 22RTE line is too short to reach the Celica hard line. If it would reach, I would prefer to band clamp it, but I don't know if this is the safest way to deal with 30-40 psi fuel.
 
the stock engine is rated at operating at 44 pounds. the regulator keeps it at no more than 44 pounds. the stock pump will do no more than 50 pounds.

go to NAPA. buy a section of fuel injection hose. buy some fuel injection clamps.

if you can find a metric fitting with a barb, use it. I could not find one. I ripped a fuel pressure hose of a scrapper honda I have, and used its banjo end. i cut the hose real close to the threaded crimped fitting. then jammed a 5/16" fitting for my pump in there. ( inline AFTMKT pump) You will probably have to dip the rubber hose in boiling water to get it to expand and pliable enuff to fit onto your barb. its what I did. I wanted a good fit.


I have a pressure gauge that reads 80 pounds, and no leaks any where.

make sure on your fuel return hoses, you use regular hose clamps. dont rely on those crappy snappy clampys. those will pop off real quick with an EFI pump in there

You're trying to more or less adapt the banjo fitting to the hard line in the pic right?

Ok, see the bulge on the end of the hard line in the pic? If you (can) cut enough of the fuel line from the donor to slide over the hard line enough for two band clamps to fit...

What will happen is IF there is too much pressure, the line will run out (like it's going to pop off) until the band gets to the bulge. Then the constriction of the hose clamp behind the bulge will cam/ lock ?? bind, behind the bulge b/c the band clamp is too small for it to allow it and the hose to pass over the bulge.

IF, I'm thinking that's what you are asking...


AND, If you can't get enough line from the door, on the cheap. I think they make an adapter that's like a piece of tube with the bulges at each end. Simply slip one end in the piece you can get, band clamp it. Then get a small piece of fuel line and make the connection(you're just making an extension). Just make sure you use band clamps on each splice.

I see what you mean. The donor flex line is too short. In the picture above, it's stretched as much as possible.

But, ya'll did answer my question; it's OK to use hose clamps on this. I'll look around for the banjo barb. Thanks.

The short answer is yes, you can cut off the bubble and flare on the proper fitting for the EFI line-to-filter hose. BTDT. Here is a pic of the boneyard fitting on new 5/16" line from NAPA going to the rubber fuel hose that feeds the OEM filter.
