Picked up a 1979 FJ40 and was servicing a sticking (Warn) locking hub. After removal I noticed the spline has a bolt and washer rather thank a retaining clip (see picture). The bolt and washer on the drivers side are somewhat loose unlike the passenger side - which turns the differential when rotated. The drivers side bolt spins as if it were stripped. Yet, when I put some traction on the washer and tried to back out the bolt it firmed up and also turns the differential, like the passenger side. I did a search for any information about this and came up blank.

Question:
1. What can you tell me about the bolt/washer versus a retaining clip which I believe is factory (I.e., what aftermarket product is this?), and
2. Is what I described above seem normal?

New to the forum.
Thank you,
Bob

Thank you for the replies. I will add that I found that the bolt/washer combo seem to come with the WARN #28771. as you can see in the picture I found on the web. No instructions unfortunately.

OK. When I did a refurb on my axle , the reason the the birfield was threaded, was because the birfield needed a way to force it out so a C Clip could be installed on the groove the birfield has. Please look where the groove is and when you have installed, use bolt to pull out shaft to install clip.

It is used on the some of the Warn Hubs. Schematic from Warn shows the Bolt and Washer.

76 to 78 birfields are shorter than the 79 and later version and use the bolt and washer on the end of the birfield. The brake rotor is also different for these years.
The 76 to 78 birfs are longer than the later models. There's good info on lockouts and knuckles below. There's more info in FAQ's in the front end section.

Problem solved. Instructions confirmed WARN premium locking hubs on Land Cruisers from 76 thru 83 need to use the supplied special washer and M8 bolt.

Previous owner stripped the bolt. Interestingly the bolt was 12mm long and had the manufacturer’s blue lock tight on it so it was likely what was included with the hubs, yet the WARN rep told me the bolt should be 16mm. I chased the axle threads with a tab and found there is 20mm of depth from the washer to the base of the thread in the axle. Cut an M8 1.25 bolt to just under that depth and installed with blue lock tight careful to not over torque.

Thank you to all those who posted!
