I'm going to tear into my front axle a year later and do some check up and some replacements, replace one knuckle stud, backing plate delete, upgrade hub studs, new tie rod boots and brake pads. I want to replace the bolts that hold the spindle on with studs, but I don't want to shell out the thirty bucks for the kit, I'm going to just replace the top two with studs from McMaster. Does anyone have one of these bolts handy that can post all the dimensions and whether or not I may need a JIS sized nut to fit in? Some pics make it look like I can get away without it but I just want to be safe.

If you're talking about the spindle mounting bolts:

They are fine threaded metric bolts. 10mm? 12mm? I bet they are at least Grade 7 too. Personally, I wouldn't be messing around with unknown quality after-market bolts on something so mission critical as the spindle mounting bolts....... just to save what amounts to a sandwich, milkshake, and fries for two at a semi-greasy diner.

just sayin

I assume they're 10 x1.25 as 99% of 10mm bolts on this car are, I just need to know the length. I'm only replacing two of the 8, and even using Class 8.8 would be overkill, the rating for a Class 8.8 10mm bolt is 115,000 psi in tensile strength. If I'm worried about breaking spindle bolts then I'm going to be worrying about a bunch of other stuff too.

So anyone able to check the length on one of these?

Did you ever find out the correct size?

Funny to see a thread from when I was in high school.
I think I’ve done something like 200 knuckle jobs since then and usually just reuse the original bolts.

they’re M10x1.25, and I recently posted several part numbers in this thread for nice alternative OEM hardware solutions for the FROR brake caliper brackets.

IF I wanted studs with the stock spindle bolt length I would think the shorter differential/axle housing stud would work well.
