One of the tasks on my list prior to SAS has been to R&R my front brakes. I decided to replace my front calipers with some new ones from @cruiseroufit and replace all of the lines as well. Prior to getting started, I went in and had a look at what I was up against and do a final recon on what parts I needed to replace. So glad I did this as on the passenger side I noticed something odd….. Top caliper bolt was 17mm but the bottom was a 19mm…. Hmmm… Seems like another possible crime scene. Sure enough, when I pulled out the caliper bolts, this is what I found:

What the???!!! Upon looking at the lower threads, That non OEM bolt was just crammed into the hole and was barely hanging on. Given this, I ordered up a time cert kit and went to work. Personally, I’ve always preferred time cert for their ease of installation vs heli coils. I drilled out the existing hole and was relieved that there was enough t material to get a good bore for the tap. Once tapped and chamfered using the tools in the time cert kit, the insert threaded in perfectly.

Once i had the time cert installed, I performed a dry fit with the new caliper to ensure all was fitting as designed:

Last step was putting all back together. Let’s just say I’m glad I found that now versus having Murphy rear his ugly head at the crux move on Black Bear Pass….

Super happy with the results and love the ease of install with the time cert products. If anyone needs to do this repair, let me know and I’d be happy to ship the kit I have to you as I still have 4 inserts left.

Just saw this, well heli coils ordered recieving Sat. Just saying, I'm a lucky SOB after a 5 day trip. Realizing in retrospect no threads of top Caliper mounting bolt, phew. This after replacing inner/outer axle shaft bearing and seal, psgr side. Braking it was drifting slightly towards Drivers, just FYI.

Super glad you found this, Looking forward to seeing the helicoil install. Take your time and it will be fine and post up here if you can so others have a reference on how to do this with both products.

Sorry, but will disappoint, deeper dive and for those various reasons. Even locktited but the open end, vibration, heat, reuse has stories I don't care to repeat. Time cert it is as calipers will be intermittently be removed.
