Front AHC shock bushing and cushion replacement

Great video, I'm thinking about replacing the bushings, fluids (and potentially globes/sensors). I have a few questions, if anyone would be able to assist?
  • Can you fit the bushing in the shock with normal hand tools, or do you really need a press for that?
  • What is the "duct tape trick" described in the video?
  • Is the process the same for all four sides? I'm assuming it is but want to confirm
Parts list I'm working with (hopefully McGeorge Toyota comes back online soon)
Beyond that I'll still need the hydraulic fluid, globes, and sensors. More research to be done here.

Also wondering if bottom bushings can be removed without a press.

Globes from Impex:

You bet! There is an o-ring within the female fitting, and a back up ring that sit on the post.

If you go to the specific service manual section recerenced earlier in this thread, the first page will show the ‘non-reuse-able’ parts referenced.

Getting them from your local uncle T, is likely a long wait, and ridiculously priced, so make sure to hit up Partsouq with your VIN
I'm in the same boat to replace all those bushing. Would you please share the service manual? I have the LC manual which has no info on AHC. Couldn't find the manual referenced earlier either :bang:

Watching the video of removing the AHC shock it looks quite easy.

So removing it, it won't be super tight and "springed up"?

Remove top bolts and bottom bolts and pull it out? What about putting it back in? What I'm afraid is it'll be too long and I have to compress it to make it fit in the truck's hole mounts.

What do you mean by springed up?

Remember, this isn’t a ‘shock’. There are no internal oil bypasses and circuits. It is a simple, linear, hydraulic ram.

If you needed to change it’s length, you would either subtract, or add oil.

That being said.

I kept it the same length when removing, and used a silicone cone shaped plug, that has held securely in place with tape. So no oil volume changed.

Also, re-inserting should not be a problem, as the ram is held in place, not wedged between two points.

Manipulating the the lower control arm with a jack will assist if needed to place, and snug up before the lines are attached.

DO NOT CHANGE RAM LENGTH ON VEHICLE, WITHOUT LINES ATTACHED. Unless you want to clean shock fluid from every surface in the engine bay.

That little silicone plug, was enough to create a near explosion level of oil spray…. Not fun clean up.

I think you could possibly remove / install a bushing by hand (long threaded rod + assortment of washers + sockets / steel tube) but….it would suck. A shop press is maybe $100-$200. So, do you want that part to take 10 minutes or five hours….give up….then go buy a press anyways…come back….and an extra ten minutes?

The duct tape creates a malleable, grip-able surface on the ram body exterior. The top ram post has a key maybe, and so does a bushing maybe (depends years), but rubber and metal do not make for a strong interface to apply large torque values to the top nut.

Haha I was mainly asking because I don’t have room for one… guess I’ll ask around and see if anyone local has one I could borrow.

Harbor freight sells some good quality presses for good price. I highly recommend them, I use my friend's as i have no space in my garage.

Those things are super useful. I was doing work and need separate my hub from rusted rotor, came right out no effort required. If I had to hammer that sucker it'll take forever.

Also very useful for pressing bearings/races or other stuff that takes forever with a hammer and drift....

exactly.

They are also mint for making press brakes out of!

Reviving this thread and going to piggy-back off of it since it pertains to my current project.

Been doing some AHC refresh and need to R&R the front shock bushings but getting conflicting info on numbers and availability.
Looking to see if anyone has recently successfully ordered these parts and has superseded part numbers?

- The lower bush part number 90903-89016 is available.

- The AHC shock cap O-ring has 2 parts numbers listed as an option for 1999;
- 90301-11022 or 96711-19009...I've read the later is for '99's but both are listed under my VIN

- The AHC shock cap back up ring, also 2 parts listed specifically under my VIN;
- 90562-12003 or 90562-09005...read elsewhere the later is for '99's

- AHC shock top cushion;
- 90540-17007...listed as discontinued on some sites with no supersession listed

- AHC shock bottom cushion;
- 90540-17008...also listed as discontinued on some sites with no supersession listed

Any verification if the shock cushion for the'02-'07 will work on the '98/'99. There is supposedly a difference in the AHC shocks for
the aforementioned years, or so I am to assume since they have different part numbers.
