Now I know it is about level with kicking your dog but I have to ask since I didn't know. A friend asked me if a fuel injected Jeep 4.0 straight six had the same bolt pattern as an F or 2F in a 40 and could it bolt up to a 3 speed tranny.

First I asked why would anyone do that, and second, I told him I would check (waiting on third to punch him in his ittsy wittsies)

No, not even close. No adapters, either.

Plus it's illegal in 36 states, including Alabama. Just so you know.

Just tell him yes, but make sure he has the important parts list to make the swap go smoothly.
Tranny input shaft from '80 Scout II
Pilot bearing from an '87 K5
Bellhousing from any Nash Metropolitan
You reuse the Cruiser clutch components and the Jeep flywheel.

The only thing I'd bolt it to is the rear bumper.

You could take the 4.0L, Aisin trans and D300 transfer case out of a heep. You'd need to center the rear axle and do a passenger side drop front output.

Not the worst set-up in the world. Lots of aftermarket upgrades.

just buy a jeep if you're going to go through all that.

That heep 4.0 straight 6 will barely push a little heep with 31"
tires what makes anyone think it would even move our big dog
40's. Tell him to get off the pourch. Only big dogs live here.
ha ha

Jeep 4.0 is a well layed out and very strong motor...................too bad they dont still have them, great motor. best part of the TJ/YJ's

The 98 4.0 TJ that I roll around in from time to time goes down the road just fine with 180HP stock out of the box......

The 1982 2F, headers, weber 38, DUI in my junk pushing 42" swampers does not have that at the crank...

4.0 Jeep engine to GM transmission adapter can be had from Novak.

I am pretty certain that if someone wanted to go this route, it would not be that difficult to get done and that the drivability of the vehicle would be improved, compared to a carbureted F/2F engine.

:wrench:

Ditto. The 4.0 is a solid engine.

However, if I was going to go through an engine swap such as this, I would just throw in a SBC.

he was joking

Having owned a 99 TJ with the 4.0, 33 inch tires.....It was just fine in the power department. It even sounded cooler with the gibson cat back exhaust.

Cleanpool is not correct. WIfe had a Grand Cherokee and I had a beater CHerokee and the 4.0 was more than enough to push both rigs.

Well at least I have facts to tell my friend. Unless he has a whole drivetrain and a D300 to put on it, not a swap that would work.

Actually some states have regulations regarding engine swaps if it is an on road vehicle and has to pass emissions and computer checks. TN TX and CA come to mind. Something about that engine has to have been used in that same model and has to be newer then the vehicle. Not all states care though.

I'd just like to make a point of order and step back into the ring for Toyota, Gumpy said "When did Toyota make a FJ40 engine that put out more than the 4.0L @177hp and 250 lbs/ft of torque? ", And he is right, but the 40 series production was stopped in 1984, and even by this stage the engine was a dinosuar.

It's only fair to compare apples to apples is it not? the jeep 4.0l is more closely comparable to the 1FZ-FE, which produces 165Kw to the jeeps 129Kw and 387Nm to the jeeps 298Nm. I know which engine would be easier to install, and I know which one I would back in terms of reliablity.

So Slickrock you can tell your friend that yes it would be possible to mount a 4.0l jeep engine in a 40 series (anything is possible). But why would you when toyota make a better, more powerful and much easier to convert engine.

Take that jeep.

I found out why he asked, a coworker of his had a 94 jeep 4.0 that was in a rear end accident and he could get the engine for free. Since they were both I-6s, he thought it might work.
