Hey folks...

I recently acquired an 89 FJ62. The frame and body have a decent amount of rust. After doing some research and getting some advice from my mechanic I think my best course of action is to do a frame off media blasting, starting with the frame. Anyone have any recommendations?... Any info, details, comments, or suggestions are welcome.

Also any recommendations on a solid mechanic in the area who specializes in and would be enthused to help.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what your budget is or how much they cost, but TLC4x4 is in Concord, NC now. That's the old Icon 4x4 brand. A Nascar chassis guy bought the brand and moved it from CA to NC.

H&H Collision & Paint in Clayton used to have an amazing reputation. It is currently under new ownership, so can't vouch for the new owner. I don't think they have a website.

Stay away from Carolina Offroad Outfitters.

it really does depend on Budget and what you want the final product to look like.
Another factor to think about is if you are planning to do any of the work yourself.

A lot of body shops now days only do insurance type work and don’t want to touch frame off complete restoration type work.

Another factor to think about is how bad exactly is the rust ( body and frame) if too far gone ( I have no idea what your truck looks like) then it might not be worth paying an hourly rate for all the metal work required ( again, it also depends on your budget and or what you are willing to pay for to have the work done)

For body work, there are so ma y levels to this. Again, it depends on what you wan the final product to look like.

The type of shop that does both metal and body work that you want ( assuming you any higher end work) will be a lot fewer than you think.

For machine shop, I myself and quite a few others in the club have used the two machine shops in Fayetteville NC to have engines or heads rebuilt.

As for mechanical work I’m sure others can chime in on what shops can do the type of work you want.

Post up a photo so we can see what you got and post up a little more details on your plans.

There are a ton of land cruiser shops 2-3 hrs from you. Tlc, h&h, stan, marshall, and i am forgetting a couple more. All of them I consider do an excellent job. Like everyone said, budget is your main constrain. There are a lot of talented people close to you. A lot of them are part of the club and are great people.

Sell it as is for almost nothing, kick yourself in the nuts, then spend $10k above market rate for a really nice original or already restored one.

You'll save yourself money, pain, anguish and time if you follow this exact advice.

Wow, didn’t know they moved. That’s pretty cool. I’m studying in Charlotte so that’s pretty cool. Maybe I’ll bring my cruiser there when I bring it down

Also, yea. I paid Carolina offroad outfitters to help me fix a problem, problem was not fixed, came back and showed them, and they just shrugged and told me they did their best. Not a great place to go 👎
