After this last trip I'm seriously considering replacing the factory tank. Another 17 gallons really sounds like a grand idea. 17+22+5 = very little gas anxiety.

Yeah, but extra gas cans hanging off of every extra space on a rig looks cool. I hear chicks dig it.

Now there are two... I test drove the '04 Thursday afternoon... very nice. I set up an appointment for 5pm so Kay could test drive it. When we arrived, we were told someone else was looking at it and we couldn't drive it! :( A few minutes later we were told it was sold... needless to say I was not a happy camper!

As it turns out the buyer didn't get financing and Onur was kind enough to let me know... Kay got her test drive and now we're sleeping on it.

Anyone have any insights on the 2004 LCs? We like to use it to pull a small trailer for some remote camping, excursions, etc. Places like Quartz Creek.

Define 'small'. Less than 3K lbs is probably no big deal. I'd suggest trailer brakes for much over that. I towed about 6K lbs once from my house to the dump, maybe 10 miles. It was doable but I was not comfortable and I needed to plan ahead for my my stops and turns. The stated towing capacity is 6,500. I've towed some small trailers, less than 1K lbs for the trailer and cargo and couldn't tell it was back there. I have a '99. I think an '04 has a VVT-i head which boosts the HP rating. I don't think the brakes are any different.

Probably a Casita trailer or pop up... 2500 lbs or less

Guy - I don't know much about the 100 series, other than they are nice trucks. What can you share about the one you are looking at? I know it has a V-8, but not sure how big (4.7 liter)?

Also, probably 5-speed auto transmission, I would guess?

How many miles? I'm glad to hear that you may still have the opportunity to buy it. Keep us posted as to what you decide.

Evan

P.S. After reading the other post about towing, I would recommend trailer brakes even on a smaller trailer. We tow a pop-up with our Tacoma now, but we pulled it with the '93 Cruiser before we got the Tacoma.

My towing story - We were going camping in the Cruiser, towing the pop-up on I-25 in the left lane behind a Corolla going about 75 mph, when the lady in the Corolla decided to slam on the brakes so she could do a U-turn in the median of I-25. No blinker, no nothing, just slammed on the brakes. We couldn't have missed her by more than six inches. I'm convinced if our pop-up didn't have trailer brakes, my front Slee bumper would have been up against the headrest on her driver's seat. So, back to my original statement, I would recommend trailer brakes even on a smaller trailer.

with that little trailer, you won't even feel it back there. Ditto on the trailer brakes.

Evan, you're correct on the engine and tranny. 2003 was the first major mid-model change that went from a 4-spd auto (the same that's in the later 80-series) to a newer 5-spd auto. Supposedly the HP got increased from 230 to 235 and torque remained the same at 320 ft-lbs. The interior dash got changed with more electronics (radio, nav, etc.) as well as the exterior with a new grille, wheels, etc. that are typical of a Toyota mid-model change/refresh. In 2006, the engine got a VVT-i upgrade which bumped the numers to 275 hp and 332 ft-lbs. It was the same 4.7 L displacement in all years. A rear locker was available in '98 and '99. A-TRAC became the standard in 2000 and the e-locker was no longer available. The front diff was beefed up from a 2-pinion to a 4-pinion in 2000 as well.

100 Series

Thank you Evan, Marc and All for the comments!

I've been out of town and just now reading back over the week's post... We ended up passing on it mostly due to price and low trade in offer.

There are plenty available on AutoTrader and I will take your comments and decide how/when to move on one.

Thanks again!

Guy

ASFIR 4x4 FJC Skid Plate. Looks like it fits Tacomas too?

Front skid plate FJ /LC 120 /Tacoma 03-09 | Asfir 4x4

Won it in the raffle. Obviously I have nothing so new as to use this. ;) I wish they had something that fit some of the junk in the family, but no dice.

Retails for $360. Any takers at $250? It's in Denver at the moment, but I will drive it down one of these days....

I have started to part out my old drivetrain.

A good chunk of parts has already been sold. I don't have the carb, manifolds, alternator, fuel pump, coil ignitor dist., transmission, transfer case, fan, rear engine hook, clutch slave, and driveshafts.

Everything else is there, and looking for a good home. The engine did run before it was pulled and here are the last set of numbers I have on it.

1) 128 2) 125 3) 115 4)128 5) 120 6) 125

I am also upgrading my front knuckles, so my stock front disk brakes are up for sale. My front axle was rebuilt around two years ago and new rotors and pads were put on then. I maybe have a couple thousand on that rebuild.

Along with that my original brake booster and a one year old master cylinder are up for sale. Both are in working condition. I have the paper work on the master cylinder from American.

This will be up for one week here and then goes to the main MUD board.

Prices are based on how much you buy.

Best way to contact me is through PM, thanks.

Well I've decided I made a mistake getting this 80 to try and tow my 4runner with. Tried it once and the 7mpg hurt. So here it is. I bought a cummins tow rig already.

I have it listed at $7200 but I will take $6700 from a HDC guy cause I know the lockers will get engaged.

'97 has dual airbags, leather power seats, and has a third row of seats,

It has 220K miles.

New brake booster and master cylinder.

Good tires, only have about 15k miles on them, good to 60k.

I just fixed the P401 EGR issue.

I put a 7-pin and 4/5-pin trailer plug on it for trailer brakes.

No rust, New Mexico truck

It's a great truck. Worked flawlessly going up to the ski hill this winter.

$7200 obo ($6700 for HDC guys)
