The hardtop on that thing is super-cool.

yes. that's the old style hardtop. IIRC, only was up to 1963 or 64 then changed. many FJ40's at that time came with a soft top. and so, not many of those hardtops are around.

i have a friend thinking of the same thing! with this program, there won't be any even in the junk yards for me to get a PS box from.:bang:

The inane things about the "cash for clunkers" program are that it's only going to speed up purchases in the short term, then there will be a lull for months or years because people already bought their new cars, and it's also going to decrease the supply of cheaper cars for people who need them as e.g. extras to go to work or buy for their kids to go to college, etc. Apparently, the brainlessness of our current leadership knows no bounds...

I suppose if you're in the market for and have the money to buy a new car, getting $1K - $2K more out of the government than you can get cash by selling the vehicle is not a hard choice. I would hope that the rules for this program allow the salvage companies to sell parts off the vehicles if they can make money off them rather than sending them straight to the crusher.

Me too. There are so many good parts still on those vehicles. Plus, by recycling those parts and selling them, more cars can be kept on the road instead of producing new ones that produces more waste, and those companies make more money which only helps the economy more. And it also means less scrap is going to the yards.

Cruiserdan has a different perspective. :D

I read that SEMA successfully lobbied at the last minute for the program not to apply to vehicles older than 25 years (for collectors) and also that parts (except the engine) can be salvaged. Whether that's actually true and/or happening I don't know, but I hope so.

George's neighbor traded an fj-62 last week

I have heard it differs state to state. some put a mix in the oil and seize the engine, then the rest can be parted out... others crush the whole car period. don't know what NM is doing.

But ya'll gotta be honest now: $4500 is more than I could sell both my 60's for... And I've got more than that into my lifted rig now.

not that I'm gonna, just saying. And I 'saved' my flat rig: my sister is excited about DDing it in Las Cruces... ;)

I was in Capitan this afternoon and drove past two FJ40s parked side by side with "4 sale" written on one of them.

The tan truck was in reasonably good shape. The rockers and quarters were in good shape, but the rear sill was cheese. This would imply the quarters are too, but I didn't have time to study either of them. The tan truck is an early 70's, and from memory on the VIN it's a 1971. It didn't have an engine and there was a bunch of junk piled high inside the truck.

The green truck I didn't look at the VIN, but from the engine I would guess someplace around a 1979, more or less. The body was rusted the worst I've ever seen, but I think the frame might have been OK.

I was with some other people and didn't have a chance to really look at them. There was no phone number, just "4 Sale" on the windshield of the tan truck. My guess is the owner wants to sell both, or bought both with the hopes of putting the engine from the green truck into the beige.

Starting to happen: Dealers begin disabling clunkers

I was at the U-Pull yesterday after work and they had signs up saying they were an authorized Cash for Clunkers recycler. They also said the engine blocks will not be sold.

They have cleared out a significant portion of the lot. Several rows in all sections are empty like they are expecting a flood of vehicles.

Think top ends are salvageable after they are done with them? i would like to do a 2f-e in my troopy if I can get the parts cheap. Haven't seen anything since you got yours up here.

I will keep an eye out. There was a FJ62 in the U-Pull a few months ago. If you have the choice I would use FJ80 parts. The ignition system is stronger than the system used on the FJ62.

If anyone is down there and sees an 80 with the center caps, can you grab them? I found out yesterday I'm missing one. Or if someone has one lying around?
