I am having problems with a ticking noise coming from my power steering pump. I already replaced the pump and gear for a new one (due to oil leaks). When I turned the vehicle on w/o the PS pump, ticking noise is gone. It sounds like a ticking noise every time I install the new pump/gear. Do you believe it has something to do with trapped air the the PS system (pump cavitation)?? We bleed the system and noise was reduced; however is still there (light ticking noise) I was using power steering oil, and I was told to drain it and to change the oil for ATF. When we changed the pump and gear, we looked inside to look for any chipped teeth at the oil pump-gear without any indication of chipped/marks on this gear. Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated.

Could be that the gear is not fully seated on the shaft. I took measurements of the gear to pump housing gap before and after. Try using a socket and try to tap the gear on further. Good luck!

Any further damage if I use the truck with this slightly noise? Hoping it may go away after driving the truck several thousand miles. The gear is brand new (bought it from Toyota...almost $200 for that gear...ouchhh) plus PS pump ($280).. and yes, I used a socket and hit it at least 20 times to make sure it was completely seated. Thank you gents for your quick reply. I am going to bleed and swap the oil and check again. Hopefully it will get better.

Yeah, definitely get that fluid out and change up for ATF as that's what it calls for to OEM spec. May need to do a couple of times and it'll be messy, but you know that already from the work that you've already done.

Replaced oil, gear and pump. Still got the ticking noise (Super annoying). I though about using a press to install the gear; however I am afraid it could damage the bearing inside the PS pump. I got a feeling the gear next to the PS pump got chipped as well. The only thing I don't understand is if the internal gear is damage why the noise is gone when I run the truck w/o the PS pump?? if internal gear is damage, the noise should be present even without the pump.. right or wrong? Any ideas??

Just as an FYI to members who haven't done this job, no need to measure the depth of the gear, the pump shaft is tapered along with the gear bore, So when you reinstall the gear it's going to stop at the exact same location on the shaft, just like before you removed it,

Yeah probably not necessary, I'm just an OCD aircraft mechanic haha. Just wanted to be s*** sure haha

Wish you were closer, i'd give ya a hand. I did a full power steering system refresh last winter. Placing the gear in an oven for a while could help also. The key on the shaft has the round part that goes into the opening facing towards the shaft. So the flat part is exposed. A new gear from partsouq is $99.25 plus shipping if yours is nicked. Good luck with it sir

I installed the new pump with gear (Inspected and did not have any noticeable nicks/dents). I visually inspected and felt the gear inside looking for dents, chips, deformations. (Everything looked ok). Installed the key, grease the gear and hit it few times 7-8 times with a long sucket 13mm / hammer (Visually inspected and turn it to make sure it was properly seated) then torque it with 54 ft/lbs as per FMS. After installing the pump, I ran the engine for few seconds (Pump without oil) ... no ticking noise. Turned engine on/off at least 4 times with no ticking noise...Tomorrow, I will get ATF oil into the system and bleed/check for leaks. I want to check how the new pump is going to behave with oil/pressure after bleeding it. So far so good....I'll keep you posted !

How did you stop the gear/ pump from rotating while you torqued it?
Some people use an impact gun..(make sure to use leather gloves while holding the gear). you don't know exactly how much torque the gun will apply though. I have an adjustable oil filter plyer and a rag/leather around the gear to hold it in place. You will need one person to use the torque wrench while the other person is holding the pump/gear and wrench. Another way is to use a vice or chain plyers in case you don't have anybody to help you holding the pump/gear. Make sure to protect the gear, and don't hit it.. because a small dent/chip it's game over for the gear !! That's the actual cause of the ticking noise. I know there is a rebuild pump out there with a gear installed. That would be another option. Good luck !
