Hey guys. The front passenger side brakes on my 92 FJ80 is shot, i am going to replace it but the disc brake on this is kinda different than any other disc brakes i have done. I think its maybe because its 4WD. I need help how to remove the disc brakes in front.. it different than what I've known..
I did my fr brakes this weekend also. You do have to take the front hubs apart in order to separate the disk from the hub. There are quite a few things that come along with is. Repackage bearing, new oil seals, gaskets, bearing races and possibly splined stud bolts if they get stubborn upon removal.
I ended up putting my new calipers on ( original reason for the brake job ) and new 100 series pads and called it a day. I was lucky in that my rotors were in very good shape.
Really not that hard took me about 3 hours per side and im a nemb to these beast of burden as well.
I belive 93-97 (fzj80) had way larger front rotors and disc in the rear opposed to the 91-92 (fj80) not sure if the calipers and associated components were upgraded as well, I also dont know if these parts will swap over. I would suggest a fsm (factory service manual) best 150 bucks I spent. If your straped for cash get a haynes or a chilton one way cheaper and availible at local parts store, or even a library. There are plenty of illustated threads onvhere as well just type in "front hub removal 80" in the mudsearch at the top of the page. Oh and
welcome, get used to using that mudsearch alot of guys will burn you if you post something thats been posted before and didnt search first. Good Luck
I used a 2 1/8" socket from sears, works well. If you are doing the rotor, make sure you service both sides.
Yes 91-92 are different than the 93-97. If you are interested in doing so, this could be a good time to upgrade to the later style brakes. The later discs are about an inch larger in diameter and nearly twice as thick. If you can pop for the new calipers, with your old cores they won't be too bad, then it is a true bolt on upgrade for the early model rigs. I did mine when I rebuilt the front axle last year.
Just to clarify, you will need to upgrade the rotors, calipers, pads, and soft lines from the axle to the caliper. The backing plate will need to be trimmed to clear the larger rotors.
The 100 series pad upgrade mentioned above can't be done on the 91-92 brakes only the 93-97.
Thanks for all the input.. I just need to find a 54mm socket or 2 1/8 and I'll be doing the front brakes right away and hope that everything goes smooth and straight forward
Yes it can, but you need to trim the pad and backing plate with a grinder. Use the original pad to mark out the shape on the new one and grind the excess material off. And wear a respirator, you don't want to breathe that stuff!!!
Just to be clear, the thickness of the pad is fine, its just the shape that needs to be modified slightly.

No it's not because of the 4WD - these things are built to last, but a PITA to work on re brakes. Major project for an 80. Old rotors and new ones are off and on my Ford Superduty in 30 minutes - with new pads.
Change your pads every 15K miles and you won't have to deal with this again. Pads on an 80 are also a 30 minute job. Hmmmmm????
I disregarded the advice of many on Saturday and began replacing all rotors, calipers, and pads, until I got to the front and realized how accurate the statement "halfway through an axle job when doing the rotors" is.
Having been apart of one axle tear down, it's not worth doing just for the rotors, in my opinion, so ordering axles and other components today, to complete the job.

Why would you need new soft lines? I'm getting ready to do this job as part of my axle service as well, and don't remember reading anything about the brake hoses needing to be changed, can you clarify?
