Legend, thanks Madcrix!

It was about 3 years ago I last looked into my cruise control issue. Pretty sure I found all the instructions on how to enter diagnostic mode on here - something like holding in the cruise set button while turning the ignition to get it started, then just following along with what the different flashes mean to identify where the issue is. The biggest effort there is finding the instructions - and naturally it doesn't solve the problem but at least gives you a pretty good clue where to go digging on a free weekend :D

and cheers to the gentleman and scholar who found this replacement! I already contacted their sales yesterday, but will just place the order since they don't reply and hope for the best :D

... and I now have functioning cruise control! Will serve nicely for my upcoming 8 hour drive interstate. Thanks again @76lcmike for finding and sharing the part that makes the magic possible :D Felt better about my lack of knowledge when the auto elec I asked about it also assumed speed would be a feed off the instrument cluster.

I’m so glad I came across this thread. Trying to find a solution for my speed sensor seemed impossible! The price has increased a bit over the years, it came to $171aud shipped but I have got one ordered.

Hey all,
this forum has been super helpful to fix my cruise control. I used the diagnostics procedure from the FSM (posted somewhere else on here as well) to figure out I needed a new cruise speed sensor. Since the Australian part in this thread has first been recommended, the cost went up and so did shipping. But I used the info on here and general specs to find a different matching part (M22x1.5 thread, 12V, 4 pulses per rev). Brantz from England makes one that matches, and it;s cheaper. I paid $93 with shipping to the US from Demon Tweaks.

You need the version with the round pinch drive pin, not the square lug. Old sensor under the transfer case came out easy (that area is "thoroughly lubricated" on my '91 FJ80). Use the pin that comes with the new sensor on the transfer case gear side, not the old one (they're different on the sensor side). I spliced into the existing cable as the Brantz sensor doesn't come with a connector. Red-red, black-black, white-yellow. Make sure the mechanical speedo works too. Cruise control fixed, no issues so far but it hasn't been in there for very long. I'm leaving for a 2,000mi road trip this weekend, so I'm really excited to have this fixed.
