1988 FJ62 - Having trouble shifting gears. Not shifting until 3500 rpm and then it's a fairly significant "clunk" sound. 288k miles. Also just started having trouble with the gas pedal being stuck in the morning. Have to really press down hard on the pedal to break it loose in the mornings...afterwards pedal works fine for the rest of the day. Any relations to the transmission problems? Are there any good FJ-62 mechanics in the Falls Church, VA area? I'm new to this. Thanks for your advice and recommendations.

How many miles on the truck/trans? Have you changed the trans fluid/ checked it's level?
The only other things I know about the FJ62 transmission is "kickdown cable"
They are dumptruck (literally, they are the same trans put in heavy duty Hino dumptrucks) transmissions and are pretty hard to kill.

I have 288,000 miles on it. I'm thinking it is probably the original transmission?? Yes, I've been changing the trans fluid and checked level. I'll have to research the "kickdown cable". Thanks for your insight.

It may need the famous Rodney flush. They’re usually back to normal after that. Also, get the throttle cable (I think they’re available new still) and lockdown cable addressed. Then add an auxiliary oil cooler which is easy and cheap insurance—the only weakness in these transmissionis they don’t take heat well.

I second what @JohnVee, @94YotaGuy, and @Stumpalama said

Welcome, @j w ! The good news is you have a full month to get it fixed before the next monthly meeting. First Wednesday of the month at Kilroy's in Springfield at 7:00pm. Well, pre-Covid anyway...
Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to meeting the group and making some new friends. Keep us posted on the next meeting.

If you have the factory service manual, there is an adjustment procedure in it for the transmission kickdown cable. The cable attaches to the same linkage as the accelerator cable and is a mechanical way to the let the transmission know that more oomph is being asked for. Since you are also having trouble with the accelerator, you might want to check that linkage.
