There is no perfect swap for everyone. Each person who wants one has their own wants, needs and budget.

I like reading about and seeing what others have done and why they like or dislike the end result. One can always learn something new.

In the end, only the guy who is going to drive and pay for it can make the decision on whats best for him. But the discussion is always fun!
Totally agree.

v8, v8s are tits. Way easier to get parts in the middle of nowhere and every junkyard has a v8.
Does that mean tits can be found at any junk yard? what if he's an ass man? where can you get ass?

You don't want the tits I've seen at a junkyard...motors too :flipoff2: If he's an ass man he should hop on the ford train cuz the only ass around would be his sitting on the tailgate!

That's what I like about gm v8 you can find parts anywhere. Since I will be driving it from state to state on road trips that will be a good thing. Not many auto parts have parts for a diesel toyota.

Been looking ebay and craigslist for a god clean motor and tranny, but hard to make a decision and really knowing if the engine is in healthy conditions and trusting the miles

What you want from the salvage yard:

Complete motor incl, starter,Alt,PS pump, idler pulleys, MAF from intake system. Some sellers provide entire intake including filter box. Exhaust manifolds will be replaced in most cases

Harness-Make sure gas pedal and module are included if drive by wire.

Vin # from donor vehicle

All EPA equipt if your state requires it, this would include the fuel pump pack

Talk to them about the motor, was the vehicle running, driving?

Yes. I would like it complete with low miles. Had a junk yard give me a price of 4k for 5.3 with transmission and accessories with 70k miles

Honestly if you are really dead set on the v8 from a junkyard its probably easier to just wait on a nice one to come through and give it time or buy a crate motor. I had a 700r4 in mine and loved the automatic until I killed two of them in the middle of nowhere and on the beach.

I might have some motor mounts for a v8 if you are interested, provided they aren't mangled but I wont know that for a while and I am not convinced they aren't shizz-can. You pay shipping.

I will add my experience with parts, I lived in the boonies while I had my 60 with a v8. It was stupid easy to get chevy parts for repairs and when I needed to take it to a shop it was easy to get things fixed. Toyota parts on the other hand were a huge pain in the ass and I had on more than one occasion had Georg @ Valley hybrids ship stuff to me since it was faster than waiting on the parts house. If you are really overlanding it is way easier IMO to run a v8. plus speed advantages and stuff.

u want everything on the donor engine: cooling fan, all the brackets and a/c compressor, ps pump, emissions crap, air filter housing, cables & hoses, wiring harness, alt...etc Potentially good to get the auto transmission with it too and the related wiring harness. Plus the ECM-PCM and or transmission ECM. Don't get a stripped engine...you'll get nickle & dimed to death on chasing parts. There are a number of places that sell engines assemblies.... Most crate motors don't come fully assembled with all the misc parts on the top end. If you have to comply with emissions then thats non-debatable...you have to acquire all that crap or at least enough to comply with the emisison rules related to swaps where you live or plan to live.
