My only real concern with that is the reduced diameter drive shaft you have to run. I'm sure they work just fine, but it seems kinda weird to run a smaller drive shaft in the front with a more powerful motor. Also at one point I was a trucker so shifting 5 gears is way less of a headache, if this was solely for going on road it would 100% be manual. I know ultimately this is my decision I have to make, but advice from people that have done the swap or driven them is very helpful.

Side note, I'm talking in an fj60 over a 62 so the clutch pedal is already there.

If it is a 60, it's very straightforward conversion keeping the H55/H42. If you do want automatic I would start with a 62 which has the better dash, auto shifter and is set up for EFI already.

It's gonna wind up with an LS either way, if you were to do this for your own rig would you put a manual or an auto behind it?

Currently my own rig has a manual.
There are pros and cons to both and I have done many of each versions for both myself and customers

you run a thick wall smaller diameter driveshaft which is much more resistant to denting than a thin wall larger diameter driveshaft. The wall thickness on the stock driveshafts is comically thin when you cut the ends off of them. A NA LS will have zero worries twisting a driveshaft. Even if you buy a brand new LS3, by the time you deal with drivetrain loss and larger tires you are very far from the advertised 430 crank HP at the wheels.

My truck was a 60, had the clutch pedal. I removed it when i removed my h55f. I am the opposite, i use my truck for road driving more, and the occasional crawl days. If my truck was predominantly for offroading i would have gone manual over auto. Manuals are fun until you hit traffic or go through a drive through in a normal commute, and cruise control is way easier to set up... though i do miss clutch kicking and drifting my 60 series in the snow. Manuals are more fun in cars anyways

Whenever you do that build thread it'll be interesting to see how easily it goes in.

I already have an NV4500 and a 23-spline dodge NP203 doubler so it will be a bolt in for me.

For pure necessity purposes, if you arent planning on taking any trips longer than 3 hours, and its not a DD id honestly say 3fe/h55f is a good move, especially with a motor with only 155k and i am FAR from a purist.

If you want the truck to be absurdly fun to drive, or want to take long high way trips or trips out of town or daily drive your truck or use it like a modern truck id go with a LS and an automatic.

i manual swapped two 22re minitrucks and the difference it made was pretty crazy and those were with a 4cyl. youd be surprised how much drivability you get from getting rid of the toyota automatic trans. Its not v8 swap levels of power by any means but it is a big difference.
What’s the rough cost of an LS w/ an auto transmission if you know?

Thats just going to vary on whether or not you get a good used unit or a brand new in box one. Im not sure what prices are these days, but i got my motor in 2021 or so for 2,500 with transmission and a bunch of other parts on it. It had 70k miles on it

@cruiseroutfit typically has H55's in stock and that would be my vote with the caveat your engine is running well. I upgraded my truck with a H55 and running on 33's is great. That said, I also rebuild my 2F with bigger stainless valves and the largest Toyota pistons yielding 4.4L of displacement. Personally, I prefer inline six's and the power delivery is fine with my truck loaded, RTT etc. If one does go with a V8, remember to upgrade the braking system as well to match the power output.
Hey I'm looking at this same combo. Doing a H55F with a 2F motor. Both are working great currently but this is my daily and just feels like I need another gear. What have your experiences been like since the conversion?
