To my FJ62 (manual) mirrors I am considering adding:

1. Heat - controlled by the rear defrost switch maybe

2. Turn signal light - maybe just an LED mounted on the outboard side of the mirror? (I am going to do the side marker-as-turn signal mod too)

3. Courtesy/down light - ideally that goes on with a touch of the mirror or door handle (to assist in unlocking in the dark) and when the door is opened)

Wondering if others have made any of these mods to their FJ62 style mirrors?

Mark

Most of us just wheel our trucks. The defrost sounds good.

Just looking for a convenience and safety upgrade. The truck sees 90% street use and winter is coming. It would be nice to not to have to scrape the mirrors off...

Me too...

Hi Mark,

I have thought about the heated mirror...but didn't think the payoff for me was worth the effort. De-icer sprayed on works ok.

I will say that I ran an additional wire from the body to the door (paralleling the route of the speaker wires) and it was really difficult. The space in the a-pillar where the speaker wire runs through the body is a mess of small body panels, many with sharp edges. If my hands were 1/2 the size they are it would have been a lot easier.

I find that in crowded urban driving a turn-signal on the side of the car is almost an essential safety element. I plan to put one right above the vents on the front fenders. This is easy to run wire to from the existing flasher on the front, and will be very visable to cars alongside.

Ive heard of ppl using snowmobile or motorbike hand warmer dealies stuck behind their mirror to get the heat to it....

As far as signals on the side of the van why not mod the existing marker lights and use them as signals? Too many lights on the fenders would look kinda silly no?

This one's awesome, way better visibility. Search for "Disco Mod" to get the how-to (not that hard).

Not to get off topic but I have wondered if anyone has upgraded to heated windshield washers.

Good luck with the mirrors, it would be a cool mod.

has anyone thought of putting on the fj cruiser mirrors on a fj62???

I have. I like the fact that they come in black and have the lights on them. IIRC some have built in defrost. It'd take a little massaging of the sheet metal, but should't be bad. I honestly really like the look of the black FJC mirrors on a 60/62

Heated mirrors are easy -- 12v Peltier heater epoxied to the back of the glass, wired through a timed relay.

That's actually a really good idea. Just make sure it's potted so it's protected from the elements!

Be great to find a lower power one to it woyldn't build up a big block of ice on the cool side and jam up the adjustment mechanism.

This might work out? Same big elephant ear look as the 62 mirrors too :)

A spacer between the body and mirror should make the FJ looser mirrors work. I have 79 series ones on my 85 using said spacers (home made).

Holy bat, s***man!!...you're worried about mirrors at this point??

Tee Hee... that's the truck that was outbound to the scrap yard... the replacement - the candidate for the mirror mods - is the silver 86FJ60 in the background...

For you guys curious about swapping FJC side mirrors onto your 60/62, here is a thread from a couple years back where it was investigated. It's possible, but would take some work. I'd still like to do it myself at some point, but it's a ways down the list unless I end up being practically given a pair from an FJC. Otherwise, once I can spend the money on them I'll order the heated pair from Rockauto and work on fitting them to my 62.
