Mechanic says it is an ignition issue. We're tried 2 igniters/ignition coils from cruiserparts.net and he has told me they don't work with both of them.

Basically, the truck tries and tries but will not start. Any idea's? I'll try and answer questions as best I can.

First things first -

You need fuel, spark, and air. Do you know you are getting fuel to the cylinders?
Are you getting spark at the plugs?

I could be something as simple as a bad coil wire are a carb problem. But you need to start narrowing it down. Let us know what yo have done/checked so far.

hint: not the flux capacitor/carb...

62's lack them

Sparks are fine. Will check with the mechanic and see what all exactly he has eliminated.

Gosh could be a ton of things. First make sure you have fuel and fuel pump runs. Secondly check for spark, if you have fuel and spark check for codes.

Next check ECM/EFI fuse, fuel pump relay.

Possible causes......Mass Airflow meter, bad cold start sensor, bad cold start injector.

But first need to see if you have fuel and or spark.

Number 1: If he's not a mechanic who familiar with Cruisers... don't trust him. - 2nd opinion maybe?

x2

What happened beforehand that got you to this problem? Suddenly? some sort of engine repair?

I hate to ask the obvious but...
When you say it doesn't start:
- Does the engine turn over?
- Are the spark plugs giving spark?
- Is the fuel pump pumping gas?
- Are all engine related fuses ok?
- vacuum hose(s) lined up to wrong ports?
- What other things have you verified/done for troubleshooting?

Anymore info you have could be more helpful.

no no. asking the obvious is perfectly fine :)...you say not to trust him if he isnt familiar with cruisers...why?

i havent done any of the troubleshooting myself. driving down the road the engine shut off and i had a wrecker take it to a (trusted) mechanic from there.

I'm going to echo the EFI fuse, along with the IGN fuse. Have you tried to pull any trouble codes? Have you tried shooting starting fluid into the throttle body to see if it will try to light when you turn the key? Have you shorted the fuel pump terminals in the diag box and listened for the pump? Have you checked the fuel pressure in the rail? Could be cold start injector (or time switch), but even if it fails the truck will at least try to start.

Just my 2 cents but I think Crusiers and their mechanical parts are fairly straight forward. Some mechanics can look beyond the mark immediately jumping the gun before checking the easiest/cheapest methods first. A 2nd opinion could at least confirm then. Then again, I personally would put more trust your hands along with this forum to get you through 70-80%+ of the troubleshooting and solutions for your rig.

Since it stopped without symptoms and it's a 62 I'll guess the wire that leads to the fuel pump in the left rear wheel vicinity broke, common thing. Your mechanic should be able to tell if you're getting fuel.

Question.....when he is testing these ignition parts such as the coil and the igniter is he bolting these 2 items down as they should be?

Or is he just hooking up the wires and expecting for it to start?

same thing happened to me!

After checking everything on my 88 62, and replacing some ignition parts, I decided to go ahead and try a distributor. Following all the steps for trouble shooting and everything turned out ok. got the NEW distributor in and it started right up and is running great to this day! I don't know why all the trouble shooting steps ran fine? I checked all the connections and did all the tests to check the dist, but when I did pull it, it was all rusty in parts that I couldn't see with it in the truck. just my 2 cents.

Interesting. That sounds pretty much like my situation. I'm leaning towards grabbing a new to me distributor but i kinda wanna make sure it isn't that wire in the rear quarterpanel first. Do I sound like I'm on the right track? :meh:
