if you don't want to invest in a puller, you can back off that 19mm nut halfway, then tug the wheel off like you mean it and the nut keeps you from eating the steering wheel when you release it from bondage. :)

I've gotten to where I can hold it with one hand and smack it just right from the backside (giggity) and it pops off the first time, every time I remove it.

Thanks for the write-up and pics. Same part and procedure worked for me on my 1989 BJ75.

I'll add a few pics of my own. I pulled the plastic assembly off the column and removed the light switch assembly in order to get the circlip back on. Was able to remove it without pulling the switch, but no way was I getting it back on with said switch in place.

My horn works but it doesn’t sound good. I though I needed to replace the horn but now I’m thinking it might be the pin.

Would a bad pin produce a tin-like, thin horn sound?

Has anyone ever swapped out the horn before with an aftermarket horn?
@nathanbsmith, It's one bolt and two wire connectors, for each of the two horns. Super easy to replace. I put a horn in that sounds more like a truck and less like a vw bug.

Great thread. I’m about to tackle this thread and I think my biggest concern is removing and reattaching thar circlip. Removing the headlight switch assembly looks a bit more involved than I would want but seeing all of you go for it is giving me courage lol. I will report back.

Ok, a special note needs to be made about the C-clip or circlip (as referred to here) in this whole thing. Boy that thing is a pain in the asssssss and easily the worst part of an otherwise fairly simple job.

I don't know if it's because I got my replacement pin from Amazon instead of TOYOTA OEM but the C-clip that came with it was THIN as paper (noticeably thinner than the original clip that came off) and broke in half on my first attempt to install it. So then I turned to the original clip I had just removed and did a practice round trying to see fit it on the new pin before going to install it, and while practicing and having to press really hard, that thing went flying somewhere (I believe it went in the direction of the dashboard) and I never saw it again. So now I have a new pin and spring, no clip.

Dumb question but can I try to find a C-clip elsewhere or is this one a specific measurement that I won't find so I need to buy a whole other horn pin?

I'm so mad at that thing, I was so close to finishing.

Local hardware store may have one.
I got an assortment bin of them at China Freight for a different project and I'm sure McMaster has them

Anyone know the size of the circlip?
I know I’m a pain in the ass. Bought a box of them. Appears to be a 2mm.
I have now i dismounted the headlight and turn signal switch assemblies for easier access. I would say if you ever do this job definitely take this extra step and dismount that thing. It will make it so much easier to get that círclip on there. Now if you’re blind like me and have a hard time seeing up close, this will still be a miserable job but it will be easier if you dismount these assemblies.
Anyway, still haven’t been able to get that circlip on. I’ve broken one, lost two and bent one out of shape. Going for a fifth attempt a little later lol. so close yet so far.
