FJ62 4WD not working,,,,

that is whats happening,, locked in 2WD shaft turns,, push H4 and it does not,, waiting for slick roads to drive in 4WD,, but would assume I am going to be in 4H,, guess I would need to be on a lift to can be sure,,

I will test unlocking hubs, push in H4,, if shaft does not turn I guess it can be that my front wheels are not engaged

threads on messing with hubs seem a little intimidating,
with new replacement hubs is it just bolt in place,, or is there more involved?

The hubs are not hard. Like I said earlier the hardest part are the cone washers. They need a brass drift and a hammer to come loose. Other than that it is all unbolting , disassemble, reassemble while watching a nice video step by step. Very basic tools too.

Rebuilding the hub is dead easy. It's a very simple mechanism. Here's a video that explains it in 10 min:

Like Randy says, the hardest part is removing the hub. You need to be careful to not ruin the hub studs; hence the brass drift. The cone washers can be a quite stubborn but with a decent amount of whacking with the drift, they eventually loosen. You can then take the hub off, set up a spot on a workbench, and have them apart, cleaned, and reassembled in an hour.

Does he need a snap ring pliers to remove the c-clip off the birfield? I think that's the only specialized tool for removal.

We’re AISIN hubs stock on 1988 FJ62?

Yes those are OEM. The gold means you have a landcruiser. Red ones came on mini trucks. The splines on the clutch that moves between the axle shaft and back are different between mini trucks and landcruisers.

Do yourself a huge favor if you have extra funds (~$6 for a pack of 50). replace ALL the bolts holding that cover on. Those are weak and snap easily.

I use these from McMaster: (P/N 95735A216)

JIS High-Strength Steel Flanged Hex Head Screw
M6 x 1 mm Thread, 16 mm Long

JIS means Japanese Industrial Standard. Always try to buy JIS for your truck and avoid DIN hardware.

I thought all solid axle locking hubs are the same, just a color change on the dial. the birfs, spindles, hubs are all the same.
IFS hubs look the same on the outside, the hub gear inside is smaller because the axle shaft is smaller diameter than birfs.

as for the OP, he could start by removing the outer part with the 6 bolts and see if there are any issues without going in deeper.

3_puppies,
No, 4Runners (I assume mini trucks too) have different splined birfields and the matched part in the hub (called the clutch in the FSM) matches the vehicle's splines.

So someone with a 4Runner can't use a Landcruiser hub and vice versa. And this is why they are different colored hub covers. I think red hub covers on landcruisers are dumb but that's my personal opinion (and we all have one :p).

Remembering now, OP won't need snap ring pliers to pull the hub cover and the springs off together. He would need a new gasket or be very delicate when taking off the cover.

do you have different part #'s for the birfs?
AFAIK all 79+ solid front axle's use the same birf. whether it is a 40, 45, 55, 60 ,62 series, 1985 4runner or 79-85 mini truck
I've swapped axle parts, birfs and locking hubs between Landcruiser and mini truck without issues, from my list above.

I will have to dig it out of the garage. I literally have a "clutch" with the different spline count than my 62. Maybe the IFS birfs are smaller?

Same here

Considering the lack of vacuum hoses, the hubs probably just need a workout. The op driving it with them in the locked position might be enough to free up the mechanism without tearing them apart. Drive around hubs locked and 2wd and then check the ds again.

IFS hubs are 26 or 27 spline.?
SA hubs are 30 spline.

left to right, straight axle Toyota hubs (30 spline), IFS Toyota hubs (27 spline), and Samurai hubs (22 spline)

Iam going to start with checking the hub dial assembly, ordered & waiting for star gaskets

I found this video, great detail & ez to follow
